At what social level would you say Sanctuary is at?

By which I mean, do you feel it's a late renaissance era society, a feudal society with bizarre dale-lander pretensions, or something more modern?

Do you feel that Class Consciousness exists among the populace, or are the peasantry subsistence workers who focus mainly on their day to day lives?

The presence of industrialization leads me to believe it's a Capitalist Republic in a Post Feudal era, similar to almost Victorian Era England - sans the development of fire-arms and other major game changers because of lolmagic and the compartmentalization of technology into Lantan.

The existence of the workers revolution also displays at least a base display of class distinction and economics.

Basically what i'm trying to get at is, do you think anti-capitalist social movements like anarchism and communism are suitable for the commoner mindset, or too anachronistic?

I think what the powers that be were trying to convey is that we live in a gritty industrial 1984 like society. We're at war with an enemy we barely interact with, we have mass production, and we definitely have left-wing thinkers.

That being said, it's portrayed sort of like the middle ages being dragged into the mechanized world by its bootstraps.

Class consciousness is very much a thing. Why else would the workers have rebelled in the Revolution had it not been? The Black Guild has been primarily focused on their rights (to what end?) for some time, while the Red Guild has been focused on enriching themselves and creating a very clear class divide.

To that end, things like communism may seem a little out of place, but I can definitely see anarchy being a driving force. After all, who is the Man in the Mask if not an anarchist (Or is he?)?

Start of the Industrial Revolution, minus gunpowder / plus magic and with coal substituted by baublium.

IR political thinking is certainly very appropriate. It might be better to avoid words like Communism or Fascism though.

But having firebrand union bosses / aspiring politician PCs screaming about the plight of the worker and rallying voters to nationalize the workmill / redistribute the new industrialist class's wealth would be neat for example.

Ironside

We're neck deep in a kind of Industrial Revolution, with less guns and more fireballs and wizards instead of bourgeoisie.

Victorian era sensibilities seem pretty appropriate here. Coupled with 1984 style political oppression - I'd read Perdido Street Station if you want what I feel to be the closest analogue to Sanctuary in literature.

Anarchism is not anti-capitalist at all. Anarchy is totally anti-socialism and communism though.

But when I hear people argue about anachronism in DDO or World of Warcraft or whatever, I find it rather amusing. I remember when I joined EfU and characters smoked ''Cigars'' I thought to myself, that's weird? But meh... That or something else. It's not a real world, and it's not connected to our own scientific progresses throughout history. Nothing is really anachronic unless Ed Greenwood or some dude-expert on Forgotten Realms or, in this case, EFU DMs says so.

I always thought the emphasis on racism on EfU made little sense with what I know of the FR. But it's always been something pushed further, to cause artificial conflicts which the server loves for the most part. Personally, I'd be interested in some Che Guevara or Ayn Rand type characters, because I love political/economic debates but in the end I play D&D because it's D&D and that's dungeon crawling to me, really.

Socialism always existed, an historian can tell me the word was invented by Marx or some other dude, but the concept always existed. Same thing with democracy, or whatever. I think a bomb on CoA was ''anarchronistic'' but it's ok on ''EFU'' or am I mistaken?

Big deal.

I'll add that the discussions about ''fuck'' and ''thou'' or ''thee'' are silly. They don't speak English or Klingon or French, they speak Chondathan and some other languages.

Irrelevant to the thread, but felt like posting this. o_0
