Rendirk Stoutheart, withered greyling scrapper, has finally met his end! ABOUT TIME.

Look at that shit! Jesus...

And here's my initial character notes outlining my general philosophy with Red:

QuoteThis character is intended to be heavily inspired by the aesthetic of the Strugatsky Brothers' Roadside Picnic,  a novel following the ugly exploits of a "stalker" who has to balance  his normal, hard-bitten existence in a dying small town with his life of  adventure traveling into the incredibly deadly Zone - the ground zero  of an alien visitation - in search of the incredible artifacts they left  in their wake, which are worth their weight in gold to the right buyer.

I've always wanted to do a similar concept centered around scrappers and  the Machine, eschewing the happy-go-lucky antics of regular scrappers  who hoard svirfneblin artifacts out of mere obsession and go for the  more mercenary route - a nasty, unpleasant fellow whose only purpose for  rooting around the Machine is to make ends meet. He's not interested in  snubbing the Spellguard or getting involved in Lower's politics, seeing  that whole district merely as a convenient stomping ground for his  black market trade.

Rendirk isn't a complex fellow, nor is he very smart; he's a bit  worldly, and time at the Workmill and worming pits has fashioned him  into a lean, cunning example of his race, with none of the zaniness to  match. He has an addictive personality, so he's given to hard partying  and drinking when the stress gets too bad. At the end of the dark, all  that motivates him is getting into the Machine, finding his loot for the  day, and getting out with his hide intact.

While I plan him to be very ambivalent and mostly concerned with staying  out of the Spellguard's way, I do intend for him to eventually become  entranced with the Machine as another aspect of his addictive  personality; he doesn't understand it, he knows it's dangerous and can  kill him at any moment, but it's just part of his routine after a certain point, so he keeps going back no matter what.
I like to think I more or less remained true to my intentions, aside from that last part. It didn't go so well in the end!

But for a while it did! Red was quite happy to play ball with the Spellguard until an unfortunate conflict of interests led him down the path to being an impromptu revolutionary. And he shared the fate of most who challenge the unshakeable grip of the Warders of Sanctuary, in the end.

His goals, at the end of the day, usually consisted of scrapping, getting money, and, further along, propagating the greyling race.

Anyway, this guy lived through a lot. Besides scrapping the Machine (something I did pretty much every time I logged in, whether alone or with a group - I hope to never see that place for a long time, lol) he fought against the Drow in the Canal War, worked alongside the svirfneblin of Sapphire Isle, traveled to Ymph and got cursed with the withering of H'bala, partook in fey games and lost his leg, got a new animatronic leg from an insane scrapper, held three scrapper conventions, became an earth touched deep halfling, and, towards the end, tried desperately to find a way to propagate his race.

He also hawked his scrapper wares a lot, which earned him a frankly stupid amount of money sometimes. As an ad-hoc archaeologist, Red made a pretty penny.

Along the way he formed many enduring relationships (friendly or quite the opposite) with various PCs helmed by such roleplaying exemplars as Gracken, Alpha, Lannister, Moonlighter, tinfoilhat, the old hack, HerDarkMajesties, cmenden, Arc, hhean, Verk, and various people I'm certain I'm forgetting.

Have some screenshots!

Scrapping in the Machine

In the Crone... just a vanity shot.

Clones!

EFU in a nut shell

Red sometimes rubbed shoulders (or scrapped) with famous people.

Speaking of artillery animatrons, Red often hunted them. By himself.

Red often had shocking disregard for ancient artifacts.

He also enjoyed a good meal every now and then!

Ship battle! Thrill at the sight of Red bravely shooting from a safe distance at his foes and mostly missing!

Amidst an epic duel (20 adventurers versus 1 drow captain) Red stops to nod at the audience.

The Ritual of the Stone Wheel

Red's transformation ruffled some feathers amongst the more orthodox halflings - the judgment of Urogolan was sought.

A second ritual was eventually undertaken to create more greylings... results were mixed.

Later, he sought the assistance of the Stewards of the Ark.

Meet Bob. Bob is a giant head.

Bob liked to talk to us.

I anticipate doing something considerably more Upper oriented next. Stay tuned, and see you next time!

greylings 4 ever highfive rip in pieces

Moonlighter

RIP in peace

He had a bunch of great interactions with Mari and some of my other PCs.

Good job carrying the torch.

Arc

No. No. Nononono noooooooo!

Sad to see him go- Red was just about the best scrapper I've ever interacted with.

Knight Of Pentacles

Hhean

I loved the slow change of relationship between Red and Flint. They met by way of a shakedown, and ended with Flint trying his damnedest to bail Red out at every opportunity. A well played crook who always seemed to be playing both sides on a regular basis. Hope you do well with the next one man

tinfoilhat

Loved Red. He played every side of the conflict well and escaped trouble (most of the time) when things got too heated. A true Scrapper through and through.

See you on the next!

putrid_plum

When we found that bed I laughed so hard when he jumped on it.

CondorHero

My favorite memory of Red will be the time he became the go-between negotiator for a hostage situation between Soujourner and Upper for Ksenya's safety. After every thing goes down smoothly, Red turns around and say "Where's my cut?"

One of the biggest scoundrel in the Underdark. :)

TheShadow

OH MY GOD YOU CAUGHT MALI FIST FIGHTING HIM! Seriously, Red was a blast, I had fun with him on Card when no one else was around, I'll truly miss him. I can't say i interacted with him as much as I could've, but he was a blast. Looking forward to your next character, and lets hope Red rests in peace.
Forever in the Shadows, yearning for the Light.

EPIC SCREENSHOTS! EPIC SCRAPPER!

woa. I wish I had plans for you <3

Kiroy

Red was the best, I'm going to miss him.

Great conversations with Bob, he's going to be pretty lonely for a while.

Red was charmingly tragic.  He was a great addition to the scrappers, bringing some cynical common sense to our total disregard for the realities of the Underdark.  His blue-collar vibe (which should probably be more usual in EFU but isn't) was very refreshing.

The vibe of his "Dunwarren Curios" racket managed to make me feel like I had missed out on a romantic bygone era (faux-nostalgia?).

Excellent PC.  I'm sad to see him go, I was hoping my current PC would be able to become more involved with him.  He who hesitates...

I'll look for some appropriate screenshots when I get home.

Agent Egg

One of the guys that made Lower really come to life.  Well played, good sir!
