EFU sending channel

One of the coolest aspects of the server is the sending system and, even cooler, is how the city sendings are echoed into the server's official IRC.

As a personal project I made a small script in irc to copy and paste sendings from the #efu channel to a channel I made called #efusendings . This way I could have an uncluttered listing of all sendings made without having to wade through hours of chat. After telling someone of this and hearing that it's actually useful to other people I decided to share it.

It's on the same server as the main #efu channel. Feel free to join #efusendings alongside #efu!

Can this be done with faction channels as well?

Sankis

You mean sendings in faction channels? I don't see why it couldn't but it's not really something I'm interested in doing.

Technologic

Less obvious to someone who isn't tech savvy enough to understand the implications.

Kotenku

The reasons aren't actually particularly obvious.

Something like this was brought up around the time the Bot was first made to relay sendings. The idea was: "Hey wouldn't it be great if Watchers could be notified out of game when somebody tries to make a report? And what if the other factions were notified when their bells were rung also!"

Faction-specific sendings didn't exist then, though afaik it's just the Society now that has a private thing -

Anyway, the big problems were these:

1) The bot doesn't have a way to filter which message goes to which channel. It's either all messages go to one channel or every channel, or  no messages are passed at all.

2) Our gracious IRC hosts don't allow extensive use of bots, so a solution using multiple bot-scripts collecting multiple sets of NWNX data from IG to relay it to separate private channels isn't viable.

But all that is neither here nor there, as it turns out I've somewhat misread the thread. I'm not particularly sure what ShadowCharlatan's concern is - that the contents of sendings made in #efu are somehow private or that access should (or even can) be policed in some way.

Maybe there is some unspecified mode of abuse this would make possible that I can't quite grasp?

That said, I've often thought that keeping the server bot in a separate channel from #efu, with the channel set so that only voiced users and ops could speak, would be considerably more ideal than allowing every Tom, Dick and Jane to mock in-game sendings in a public venue. I've heard the complaint repeatedly of people who use #efu only to view sendings, which this would seem to address, if only the alternate channel could be made prolific enough to actually see use, and not be outright inferior to the purpose of #efu.

Sankis

I don't really intend to expand it any further than what it is. My intent was always for it to be simple and it does exactly what I want it to do.

As for faction channels, I'm not really interested in enabling any kind of sending ooc commentary. That already exists in #efu to an extent. I'm not saying every faction channel would do that but it just seems unnecessary to propagate sendings even further.

The whole point of putting sendings in #efu in the first place was and is to help get people IG who are just hanging out in IRC. Separating the sendings completely by removing them from #efu defeats that purpose as I assume it's not likely everyone will join up into #efusendings.

I would think the obvious reason would be shenanigans. Independent bot, sendings being faked or witheld for ambushes/secrecy in one room versus another, etc. I thought this and then thought, who would do such a thing? But shenanigans have happened before so anything's game I guess.

That said, the only reason I came to #efu in the first place was to be able to reach a DM when needed and hear sendings.

This channel is excellent. Nobody talks in it and you can monitor sendings without the typical IRC drama. I am very grateful for this.

Just to put it in perspective, within 12 hours (almost exactly! Huh!) of Sankis announcing the channel's creation, the channel has been averaging 50% of #efu's population, and now, in off-hours, is above 50%, suggesting it's been adopted by a significant portion of #efu's reliable idlers.

I know on more than one occasion I like to use sendings later by copy/paste for forum purposes and otherwise.

Could be a potentially cool tool for many reasons. As well as a sort of "Rumor and Gossip" ticker of recent events.

Too bad that so many in IRC think that its purpose is to troll, insult the sexuality of others there or to re-enact favoured dramas from 4chan. I can do without all of that and I find #EfUsendings refreshingly free of it.

To be frank, I am delighted that I can now just leave #EfU whenever I've had enough of it and still have access to ingame sendings. It's a huge relief for me, especially in times where I quite simply lack the energy reserves to put up with the near-anarchy of the main channel.

All which can be moderated away. I am not always around but feel free to drop me a note when this happens and who does it.

Bots in faction channels is a no go.

Sanctuary is not leaving #efu.

Enjoy what Sankis has done. It's highly appreciated.

I am sorry that you take offence. But the fact is that #EfU is at times so toxic for me that I can't stand to be in it and that I have more than once heard others express agreement with me. I will not give specific examples as they scarcely belong here but I am afraid that I do not share your idealistic view of the community channel. It is true that it can be useful in many ways but that does not mean it is always a good and healthy place.
