Brawler perks and shield AC

In the spirit of Talir's recent addition, I think it would be a nice thematic addition if dedicated brawler PCs (non-monks) would recieve +2 or +3 Shield type AC if they are not using a shield and are fighting barefist. This could apply, for instance - as the level 8 bonus of the Brawler fighter background.

It might just be me, but I find that using a shield while fighting barefist is a bit clunky, while at the same time, forgoing 3 points of AC plus various bonuses afforded by a shield is a hefty price to pay.

Yes and YES!! I really dislike people who fist brawl but use shields, especially ones bigger than a buckler.

In seriousness however. The trade off of carrying a shield is obviously the weight. and invetory space. +1 AC shield are common, but they arent readily available. For the fighter to suddenly get 3 free shield AC seems. . . weird to me.

Maybe they can get receive an additional +2 bludgeon damage if they hold no shield like the two handed weapons?

The real problem with implementing something like this is just....where do you put the bonus so that it doesn't get used by anyone who isn't a dedicated brawler?

If you're not careful you end up with people who aren't dedicated unarmed brawlers with +3 shield AC when they shouldn't have it. I recall there was a time when the Brawler perk was 2/+x or something of  that nature and you very often saw fighters with no unarmed  inclination at all taking the perk simply for that defensive bonus.

I think Thomas might have the better idea though. Offer an offensive unarmed bonus while not using a shield. I'm not sure how you do so without giving more damage to monks though.

Honestly add a penalty instead of a perk.

Instead of a perk give an AB penalty to people dumb enough to attempt brawling with a shield strapped to them, and AC -2. This shield brawling is some unheard of suicidal nonsense that no brawler would seriously do, and is enabled by lame mechanics.

People should not be getting perks for the gift of not being retarded.  

Just insert a penalty to tasteless people who use shields while being "Fist fighters."
