Disclaimer here is my PC doesn't have a pickaxe, and I have no idea what sort of mining system is in place already. However, after seeing some of the new placeables out in the wild, I was thinking that there could be room for a mining system in the UD.

Perhaps a system could be implemented where after the reset, rock placeables (veins of copper, malachite ore, etc.) would appear throughout the Underdark, or exploration areas that could be explained as new tunnels shifting, falling away or being covered up. If you had a pickaxe and at least one point in EFUSS Mining, you could try to chip away a few pieces of the rock in question before the vein was depleted. The better your mining skill, the higher quality stone you would receive- maybe make the roll influenced by strength and efuss mining, with a racial bonus for dwarves?

Copper and malachite could be sold to the Spellguard/Scrappers and merchants in Upper/Lower respectively. Mithril would be difficult to find and even harder to mine, but could be turned in to armorsmiths along with armor to forge, and be rewarded with some small boost to AC in exchange for mucho gold. Maybe some rocks could be magical in nature and provide you with some other boon once obtained. Purple crystal placeables could be destroyed for a chance at a dissipating crystal item. The act of mining in general could be given the same effect as shrieking mushrooms, attracting the nearby monsters in the area towards the miner in question.

Just a thought.

Dwarves ruin mining, it is a known fact unfortunately. :(

As much as I think this would be cool, I genuinely fear it would devolve - like so many things - into a buffed up dwarven wizard running around invisible by himself to hack at every rock he sees before running back (invisible and without a word of RP) to turn in the minerals so he can fill his bag up with more potions.

And then after a week, the DM team would nerf it, and then no one would bother doing it anymore.

I wouldn't make it as valuable, but as another source of reagents/ materials. Having gems around to be harvested would be something nice.

Edit: Maybe for people with investment on Mining it would be easier for them to find such minerals during their looting of the wilds??

Each kind of EFUSS investment could be influential on the stuff dropped by the diverse things an adventurer might encounter, maybe?

There was serious consideration of implementing something like this, and some version of it may still appear with time. I have to figure out how to somehow reconcile real-world geology with the inherent weirdness of the Forgotten Realm's Underdark first. So don't expect it soon.

Those that have EFUSS Mining will often find some use for it in my quests, however...
