[A letter finds its way to the College.]

Balladeer Alain,

Word has reached me that you sought me over the bellows, to provide you with a measure of verse that I had promised regarding Recluta Benedict Gummo. It is included in this letter. The verse is in iambic tetrameter (eight syllables per line, representing the wholesome spokes of the Wheel, though there are two lines offset in trimeter) and partially enjambed. I hope you find it well.

I do not mention the Moteists that defamed him, of course, who mocked him to his face for the crime of being born a Gnome. To mention them in opposition, even to use them as a foil, would degrade Gummo's sacrifice by implying that it was somehow in answer to their insipid words. That they should have some note, even as fools, in his epitaph? No, he died for the Rose, his comrades, and the Quest. And we shall remember him for these things above all.

Best,

Sister Amélie

QuoteOf Benedict Gummo, called "The Nose"

One of the Cinquefoil Rose who fell at the Red Hill in the War of the Southern Wastes on Illul 30, IY 7787.

By Sister Amélie
Adar 18, IY 7787

From outer Ash came plying swift;
Intrepid scout of Gnomish form;
For long had he been far adrift;
And purpose seeking, sought reform.

That all that was, would not be last;
That Age of Ash should be downcast;
That he should earn a place therein;
And know a worthy home.

And when has Cinquefoil valor found;
A home in one so small of frame;
Upon Edutu, courage crowned;
He floats to rest in Martyrs' name.

A week, Recluta knew we he;
Who bled his lifeblood to the scree;
Of Red the Hill that he would win;
But now no more to roam.
