Clown Land quest part 2

Did the clown land quest part 2, the locked and trapped chests could not be opened (monsters should have keys? they are key only) We asked a DM to check the contents and apparently they were empty (A mistake?).

When we finished the part 2, we were unable to leave the area and had to rquest the same DM port us out.
