Good positioning is key. You don't want to get in a situation where you're surrounded and can't disengage, or taking too much damage to heal through it. Don't get into melee if you're a wizard. Don't take improved expertise because it will make you want to charge in and stand still without actively doing anything useful.

Learn when to drink what potions. Barkskin and blur are always useful in tough fights and PvP. Clarity can be life or death.  Don't play an RSD for your first character because it reinforces bad habits that are hard to get over later on, like not managing supplies and relying on feats that get everyone but yourself killed like improved expertise.

Don't get improved expertise. Expertise is enough if you need an AC toggle. Blind fight is incredibly useful on most non-caster builds.

It can be costly to rely on healing crystals and potions for every minor scrape.

Relying on your companions with medicines and a good heal skill is more cost-effective all around, or selecting perks or classes with healing abilities.

Having an alternate way to heal yourself means you aren't losing 15-30gp in supplies every time you get hit a good one by any given enemy, or having your companions with their crystals foot the bill for you when you need to heal between encounters but don't do it yourself.

Still Trying

EFU has many summoning trinkets; summons can be very useful as both decoys and trap finders...be creative!

There are also ways to change what is summoned to better suit your need.
