SEND HIM TO THE WALL... or actually THE SURFACE

The Issue: I have been involved in a bunch of PVP events over the past weeks where people have been captured by the Watch and then it has got somewhat awkward as reasonable OOC considerations of not wanting to cut short PC's, has come up against IG demands to see criminals/rebels etc. executed.

EFu:R now has a threat so overwhelming and terrible that surely we would not be executing powerful rebels/rivals/evil doers but instead aiming them at this great overwhelming enemy?

So I would like to suggest a way for the Watch to IG address this.

Potential Solution: Much like in GoT where people are "sent to the wall", EFu:R could have its equivalent of being "sent to the surface". What the "surface" could be is a mega hard / perma death set of events / quests where the guilty would be set some challenge to attack the Dread, or defend some outpost. Essentially a bit like the hardest of the surface portal quests.

In trying to outline how this could work I have come up with the following, there maybe way better ways of implementing the idea but these may help to outline my thought process:

- The PC would have their spawn point set to this new location.

- This punishment could be issued by an officer level PC/Councillor.

- On "completing" a defence quest they would get an "OOC token". Collect enough of these and they "win" their freedom home. difficulty wise it would be on a par with distant shore/Temple of Vera i.e a high chance of death. But in this instance no/little loot. Just the IG rep of being a total badass at having done it (think hard as nails Watcher on the Wall)

- It could be done alone, or a group could be sent or the allies of the guilty could volunteer to go as well.

- They could only do one of these "quests"  every reset, so some "time" would have pass to get back (if they ever do)

- They will have done a tremendous service to Sanctuary if they survive, but would still be exiled if they ever make it back. There would be only basic supplies there so there is definitely a "penalty" in that they will use lots, for minimal reward.

- You would have to be "worthy" IG of this (min lvl 7 perhaps) else you would just be got rid of.

This could make a super cool ending to a PC and give the Watchers another option rather than "set them free or FD them", which rarely gives a "nice result".

Thoughts welcome!

There was cool quest along these lines that this existed for the ooze cult, also, where you could force "infidel" clerics to endure the awesome power of the ooze. If they survived, they got experience and spell failure for a few days.

I would love to see more of that. It does not even have to be a surface death quest. It could become faction-themed, a sporting means to rebuke enemies of your ideology. Flush Ordinants into a labyrinth of caustic suffering within Slp'ytthx'grlp'tnsslp'pssph'alshlpt! Teleport drow brigands to the depths of a Chosen breeding ground! Cast a Watcher into a pit of alien nightmares!

Punishment for exiled...

[Strong man throws a boulder at the Kingsley defence pillars]

"Fetch that back for me would you?"

Traensyr is another alternative, set up minor flavourful quests to lay siege to Traensyr that add points toward the siege, ranging from:

Setting up psionic disruptor bombs that un-enthrall enemies that are only held in thrall from psionic influence, causing them to fight or be killed by the implant-controlled forces (forced in-fighting to weaken forces etc)

Navigate through sewer passageways to break into Kingsleys basement to pick up 'Supply Boxes' to retrieve for a Watcher/Exile Collective Outpost situated on the Eastern fringes of Traensyr

Mindlessly tunnel through a ridiculous amount of boulders to create passageways behind enemy lines.

And other things perhaps, until they earn the right to come back to Sanctuary as, effectively, a war hero.

Stick another guard post on the cave transition to the Badlands and flag people marked for exiles to be captured by that guard post, Ormulax or the Exile Collective if they try escape to the low roads, by boat or through the Lowerdark.

But rather than ask for new content to be created to accommodate perhaps poor? handling of trials (I have NOT been witness to any recent trials in the past few months so I honestly don't know and can't say what's going down)

... Councillors and Watchers should be using fines or debt bondage to try and exert control over the unruly populace until they get better at being bad or fall in line and stop being a menace. Or threaten with Collective implants and purging on the other two capture spectrums. Dead people don't learn anything.

Not everything has to go to Exile or Death, but if that's the current trend of judgments then that's IC too I suppose...

You can start an uprising over unfair verdicts that happen to your companions rather than ignoring their plight because you feel you can't do anything.

That's my opinion anyway on the matter. There's an odd lack of empathy for character lives when players can 'roll up more people.' If there was a theoretical limit to how many more people could come in through the portals, would you keep killing your only possible resource to combat the Dread?

Hell, just stick electric shock collars on offenders and let Watchers have a button that stuns people wearing the collar in the same area as you, knocking out invisibility and stealth.

I think this is where a character could lobby for these changes IC, a law/policy maker, possibly even a hard line member of the now defunct Black Guild. Stuff like this could be seen to ICly rather than OOCly, then OOCly discussed amongst the team if they felt that the push for it was large enough and made sense.

This is something to be handled IG. Preferably without a requirement for DM oversight. It is possible for councilors to make their own punishments in this era. I am eager to see what alternatives people make. :)

Agreed that it’s best raised and initiated IG.

It’s worth recognising though, that some DM crafting would be required to implement something along the lines of the things that have been raised.

So a positive or at least not a negative response, could open the way for such IG proclamations.....

I've always been a fan of alternative punishments that have some meaningful consequences terms of narration and not just culling your wallet or worst, your limbs. I'm glad such options are out there for the Covenant.

It is indeed an IG issue, but when deciding on 'creative punishments' - you necessarily consider what's doable and what's not in terms of module. Having a similarly scripted faction-specific punishment option for the Exiles and the Red Cloaks would be a great thing. Some form of enthralment and Legal debt-bondage easily come to mind, but I'm sure there are better ideas out there.
