For the Mines quest (low caverns) rendition with only kobolds, pretty much every single kobold from the quest was at the beginning part with the barricades, and killed us. They all were attacking through invisibility and the evokers were casting through it, as well, even the ones without seeing. There was literally 30-40 kobolds in the one spot.

No idea why this could be - I don't think there have been any changes. Was there anything else odd going on?

Did someone have a Familiar or Animal Companion out?

Undead minions might also trigger quest scaling.

And to some extent, there is meant to be a large number of kobolds in that area. The quest is front heavy. It's also well-documented that kobolds will sometimes attack hidden characters (or even drink detection potions to do so).

I think I've seen something similar to what sharkinajar is describing, though. I have experienced before a "clumping" effect, where a disproportionate distribution of enemies would fight the party all at once. We'd go on to find normally populated sections of the quest would be empty. I speculated that this happened because dividing placeables (such as barricades) were destroyed that reset by a previous party, and was a side effect of recent improvements to the artificial intelligence. It definitely escalated the difficulty of some quests, but it was difficult to prove, possible to overcome with the right magic, and a fairly wild guess in the first place.

From what I'm aware of, the first gate in that kobold quest is locked but the kobolds still obtain perception of your character and try to break it down..

..and when one kobold runs off for backup it seems to act like a bunch of mousetraps and ping pong balls.

Combine the awkward circumstances of a pre-opened gate, an immediate back up call on entry into the area and possibly slow loading times as the player group piles in and woo instant army.

Oh and I've noticed some wild creature AI's like to go 'full area hunting' for PCs after killing a stone lizard or something, even going so far as to track attack them while the PC has been invisible the entire time...

We had no familiars or summons out, or anything like that. For what zDark Shadowz said, the gate was unlocked and fully open. "and when one kobold runs off for backup it seems to act like a bunch of mousetraps and ping pong balls."... pretty much this, I'm guessing, but they ping ponged as soon as we entered the quest area.

As for why they were able to cast spells against us and attack us while we were invisible, I've no idea.

Edit: apparently the swarming is caused by the barricades not respawning + the AI fetching all their friends. Like dominos, but with kobolds.
