Generally I hit suspected newbies with an OOC tell if they're running everywhere, have a default char description etc and just say "hi, you new?" and if they want any advice on how to settle into the server, I'll tip them off.

As for starting without the portal, that is possible now, we have "shipwreck" and "resident" entry points.

They were ready for some hand-holding newbie quests and NPC interactions (which don't exist here)

Of which we have plenty, but not so many as to make it the focus.

[salutes] Sir, yes sir! My first EFU:A character of 2 days greeted a new arrival last night...even while amongst a group of newbies myself. You never know when that newbie who just showed up will a great player one day, or a great player trying a new server! Play nice in the sand-box kids!
