Musings on my First Day

Firemind

Well, just finished my first day on EfU.  Just thought I'd give it a try since I haven't played here since the Underdark days.  So I make a character and log in.  Wow, there are some really cool perks and systems!  This is gonna be fun!

I show up in Mistlocke.  Everything is dark.  People are allergic to colors. Talk to some people and quickly find something out: No one plays nice characters.  Players are nice ooc, characters aren't.  People grab me for quest trains...okay...fine.

Quests are fun, same as scripted quests on most servers, way less gold!  Interesting...

Now, here's the annoying part:

I'm just starting to enjoy the server, getting the hang of it, and -boom-.  Clicked a transition, teleported to a random place on the server.  Of course it's right next to some assassin vines which kill me in one round.  Okay, whatever, I've had characters die before.  So I lose a level, big deal.  I choose to respawn at tower.  Wait....all my stuff is gone?  All of it?   Everything?   Now I'm much better off just permadeathing and concepting something new.

Well...oookay.  I don't even know what to think.  People keep telling me oh "EfU is a tough server".  I'm particularly interested in EfU because I want the challenge of learning a new server and not having OOC knowledge of every quest I do everyday.

I'll concept something up and log in again later.

Mort

Hey. Welcome to the server!

It's true that the mechanics of death are harsh, but if you ask nicely on the DM chat, I don't know a single DM who'd refuse clearing your corpse of monsters so you can respawn with your gear.

wcsherry

Yeah,

Don't be shy to ask for a corpse clearing. If a bug like this happens again we'll always help you out.

Kinslayer988

I would like to echo Mort on that, and more importantly, welcome to the GrimHowl server
<SkillFocuspwn> no property developers among men only brothers

Firemind

Oh!  I did not know that!  Oh well.  I'll concept a new character anyway.

Sternhund

Welcome to the server. If I see you online I'll keep a look out.

Kotenku

While getting killed straight through a transition definitely sucks, I think it's fair to warn you that exploring outside Mistlocke without other people, or a good idea of what's out there, is incredibly dangerous.

Who did you play in the Underdark? Or what account did you use?

Ironside

Ye Horn be a cruel mistress.

Joe Desu

Hope to see Olivia JoySword about. Welcome to the server.

Welcome back! EFU is definitely a tough learning curve, but if you can stick with it and learn how to use the various systems the DM team has put together for us it's definitely an unrivaled experience in RP, in my opinion.

If you need anything or have some questions and are feeling shy about asking a DM, you can PM me on IRC and I'll be glad to help with any questions you might have!

Hello, welcome back! I appreciate feedback from players, even when it's not good.

What was the transition? Was it a "Pass through the mist..." transition? These are a sort of way to explore areas very far away from Mistlocke, so often indeed can bring you to quite dangerous places. Certainly there shouldn't have been a monster directly on the other side, but sometimes this will happen and there's a limit to how much we can do about it....

We try to reach a good balance of keeping things challenging for veterans but welcoming for new players, and I'm not sure we always reach it.

Bear in mind that even if you don't get a DM to help out, your possessions can always be retrieved regardless - perhaps even with the help of someone in the town. I'm sure that just as any DM would be happy to help, almost any player would be happy to help a newer player likewise.... even if they are IC'ly mean!

I'm somewhat surprised that you think Mistlocke is dark and drab, if you spent time playing here in the first chapter!

Anyway, good luck and hope things work out better for you.

It is also worth noting that joining the irc channel will really help with this problem. Throwing out a message for help will usually work. I often play in slow times when the DMs are not available, and when none are available, players will often offer to clear monsters from your corpse for you.

We have all been there so many times, we know how heart breaking a feeling it can be to be monster blocked from your gear!

One of the things I learnt quite quickly on efu was that the world is out to get you; unless you know you're prepared to deal with it on your own, think about hanging around town and making some friends to take on quests and exploring.

Also, it might have just been the players you ran into that were rude and colourless; for me, the more recent run of EfU:M characters are at times cartoonishly brightly coloured and exciting costumed. Although that could equally mean I'm one of those players who seems allergic to colours >_>

MirrorMask

Yes, there are many pc's out there who are awful nice.  It may just take a little bit to learn who they are.

Firemind

I was following a PC who took me through one of those mist transitions.  The monsters weren't immediately on the other side.  I wound up in a cave or tunnel and died when transitioning out of it.  It's fine.  It was all IC, since I didn't know what exactly the Mists are.

Made a new char and I'll be more careful this time.
