After having been pick pocketed yesterday and having not noticed my char had in fact seen the incident (and could have reacted) until much later on, I was wondering what could be done to make it more obvious to a player that they have been assaulted.

Would we for example be able to have the pick pocketer turn hostile, if they fail the appropriate saving throws?  This would at least take the focus off the person attacked from have to see the message, turn hostile, finally react and so forth.

Just a quick thought.

You see the incident immediately if you catch the thief, but sometimes you won't notice the missing gold right away. Noticing that the gold is missing is not the same as catching the perpetrator, you'd then need to work out who did it through roleplay. Those are two different scenarios. Because of that the rule is you don't need to hostile if you're unstealthed, to avoid metagaming.

If you want to react it's not so hard to turn hostile and do so, and you don't need to check for a DM because by the rules it's the pick pocket's responsibility to have done that before making their attempt. If they haven't and you attack it's the thief the broke the rules, not you.

As far as oocly not noticing the message, well I don't know if there's as solution for that other than paying closer attention.

Pick pocketing is already fairly high risk for low reward. If you aren't paying attention to what's going on, I think that usually translates to the explanation of your character not paying attention as you are ultimately responsible for your PC's actions.
