Spells Detecting Stealthers

I don't know if it's possible, but it would be nice if saves and the like of people in stealth, and not detected by the spellcaster, wouldn't show up in the combat log of the character who's doing the casting. Recently I've seen AoE spells used to detect if a stealther might be near by casting a spell and seeing if someone has made a save by virtue of looking at their combat scroll.

Gnomer Pyle

sounds like heinous metagame to me

I'm not sure about that. One could easily say that a Wizard or Sorcerer who creates / uses this magic would know if it has effected someone. I suppose a DM ruling would need to be made one way or the other however.

I can certainly see that, but I'm not certain that should apply to PCs using devices. I've seen both examples take place, spellcasters and those using items. I made this as a suggestion more because the DMs probably have better things to do with their time than police this, so if it could be scripted so that those who are undetected don't show up in the combat log that would be best. However, it might not be possible, or it could be too much effort to do so.

Well if an evards black tentacles spell is used you should be able to see those tentacles of animated darkness wrapping around and constricting some invisible target, or a big smudgy mess for grease, or if it is a web spell and the stealther tries to move (or is stuck) the tangling webs shifting or outright covering them head to toe to ensare them like a net would give a clue. If anything these sort of things should break stealth.

Now if it's something like using /c hostile all and then casting Sanctuary to see who makes the will saves that is definitely very abusive.

Having played many many wizards, I actually cannot recall this happening in my combat log over the years (and certainly having caught stealthers by accident when hitting others or whatnot), though I may be wrong.

Big Orc Man

This is definitely a tough one.

It's hard to believe you'd know where your flame strike hit a hidden person, but a burning hands would be fairly obvious.

Quite a pickle!

Could we make certain rare spells give temp. penalties to stealth?

HalflingPower

The cleric who stocks up on sanctuary spells and casts it every 5 minutes in the wilds is a expert in the fine art of anti-rogue theory.

Big Orc Man

Why not just use Amplify or Clairvoyance/Clairaudience?

Caster13

Because those spells might not bump your listen/spot high enough to be a reliable mode of detection compared to seeing dice rolls in the combat log with names attached to them.

Personally, I think it's best if we stick with the "what you see is what you get" mantra. You don't see a stealther/invisible person de-stealth or break invisibility? Then you see/detect nothing. This will at least save us threads upon threads of "Are the explosions from fireballs too chaotic and/or violent too outline where an unseen person is?" or "Does Tempus tell me if he hits somebody when he smacks down an HotG?" and so on.

Try casting the cantrip Light on them.

clearly metagaming, there are already spells to help detect stealthers. Stealthers already have to invest pretty much most feats/equipment slots to be good at what they do. Allowing this kind of thing is just a giant f u to stealthers. Invest in spot/listen and stop metagaming.

Its just as bad as using caltrops to detect someone is the (and auto id) i mean it would make a sound right? Wysiwyg

Jasede

What about using fireballs?
And wouldn't caltrops move around if someone stepped into them?

It's a can of worms, I tell you. Best to wait what the DMs say. I can see great arguments for both sides.

Caltrops would do more than move around. They'd also leave a trail of blood as the metal spikes are impaled through someones feet.
