Bad Manner in IRC

I don't know if it's always been this way or if it's actually something new but I've consistently been seeing players act like epic douche bags towards one another on irc, treating their peers with open, vile disdain, throwing out an excess of spiteful passive-aggressive remarks and going out of their way to antagonize, berate and outright defame other members of the server. It's gotten to a point where OOC seems to spill into IC and vice-versa.

I've even seen new players being openly treated in this fashion on a daily basis and to me it is outright revolting to see such behavior from what is suppose to be a community of friendly and high quality role players. I've even considered to stop playing here as it's become so frequent as to ruin my desire to be involved with this kind of behavior.

I don't care how much you disagree with someone who has dared to voice their opinions in an honest and civilized fashion, for once you've begun spouting personal attacks against fellow players, you've clearly crossed the line. Even saying something as "I don't like you" is despicable and fosters nothing but animosity between our already dwindling numbers, so I urge you to keep that kind of thing to yourself.

The rule of "if you have nothing nice to say then don't say anything at all" is golden in this instance so let's try and keep that in mind. We all make mistakes. We're all still learning in this voyage called life. So please think twice before you press the Enter key to send that snide remark aimed at fellow players. I literally cringe when I see people down talking to each other in a place like this, where we're suppose to be working together in order to create a cool story instead of acting like we're better than anyone else in displays of gross elitism.

Sorry for the long post, but I just want people to be nice and otherwise wouldn't have bothered to write this out if I didn't feel it were important.

Have a nice day and game on!

Incorrigible

It comes and goes in phases. I once had to leave irc for a period of two months because it was simply intolerable.

If you have issues with specific people being rude in irc you should speak to a DM with regard to your concern and allow action to be taken. While I sincerely doubt it was your intent, in this post you are talking down to everyone in the community who takes part in irc. This behaviour is equally as harmful as the issues you brought forward in your post.

This isn't the first time players have attempted to police one another through forum posts and I feel that the server as a whole would be much better off if concerns were brought to the administration rather than kept quiet until frustration reaches the point as to merit a post like this one/constant snide remarks in irc.

I don't think it's as bad as you think, personally. It's a small community and a lot of us like giving each other an unnecessarily hard time of things (in jest). Though in every small community there is very likely going to be people you just do not enjoy playing with. I try my best to avoid people with certain play styles I do not enjoy..which I find infinitely more productive than trying to change other people to suit my tolerance.

In the end, you can only worry about your own actions. Try to be  respectful, fair and civil to your fellow players (both IC and OOC) and hope that it  fosters some good will in the community by leading through example.

Just be chill, laid back, and try to have fun. It's very easy for the line between IC and OOC to blur and to start taking things a bit too seriously. Occasional breaks from EFU helps keep the passive aggressive angst down, I find.

Just some thoughts from teh Vlaid.

It is truly never hurtful to ask a change in common behavior in #efu.

I personally ask people to be considerate there as well. It's public channel focused to bring out our sendings and share information and social chatting for the community, but it is above all public chat for our server. It is easy to do the trash-talking in private channels or private messages - sometimes those jokes might be hard to understand for newer people.

If it comes to bitterness or steaming, it happens to everyone. However try to avoid being so called douschebag daily in irc, and if there are issues, come to us and we'll try to solve them.

HungeringShadows, I left out names and typed "act like douche bags" because I didn't t want for anyone to feel attacked. I didn't bring this to the Team because it's been overly prevalent and I didn't want to oust any particular person, choosing instead to make a plea towards everyone.

It breaks my heart to see a new player join the server and think "wow this newb is cool" and then I see people being mean to him on a daily basis in IRC. I'm amazed that he chose to stay with us.

I'll admit that I've gotten hot in the public chat before but as I said we're all humans and we all make mistakes so hopefully we can put these ways behind us so everyone can enjoy everything the server has to give. The fun is made for everyone.

I did not find the original post to be condescending and I think it is good to spread this message from time to time.

Sometimes a few of the players like to make quips at one another, but often for those who do not have the shared cultural history it might seem outright rude and even derogatory in general. Its worth being mindful of that.

Quote<@Talir> If someone ragequits due to a mistaken joke, then it's gone a lot too far and beyond the borders of being fun. It's difficult for others to know as well. If I call IO scum, no one here would know why or if I was not joking. We're a community, we can laugh and have fun with each other but don't degrade ourselves like the infested pits seen elsewhere. We're so much better :)

Thanks for the stirring speech, Mahatma.

It's funny because I_O, being the pure stock of Hessian Noblemen, is anything but scum

New Players

I've never seen a new player being given anything other than warmth in IRC, its a sure fire way to cease trolling, in fact, if we see a new face in there, its guaranteed to change the behaviour.  Thats just my opinion though- If someone can state an example of a newbie being given grief, I'd tell a DM...

Howlando

Please report issues to me, I have no tolerance for this.

Damien

I think this really needs to go both ways tbh, I may be an asshole on irc but my comments usually only relate to people being assholes IG. I don't understand why being an asshole on irc is so regulated to being an asshole IG.

Asshole OOC versus asshole IC?
