Toll gates, fresh blood pass

with the creation of the toll gates new characters and mainly new players will not be able to get in if they do not know about it when they come in, my suggestion is to allow newly made characters in the introductory quests in for free once, or change the way in after the mist coffin so that they are coming inside of mistlocke past the toll booths once, that way they can get the gold to pay the tolls.

Aethereal

It seems to me that the toll booths are a plot development associated with something larger than what it may first seem.

Even new PCs start with 10gp, but there are ways to deal with it without need of coin anyway and that would be best for new PCs to find out in-game.

Suffice to say, this is a premature suggestion.

It is through Art, and through Art only, that we can realise our perfection.

This suggestion is not there to protect new characters, or OOC'ly circumvent an IC plot.

The Suggestion is to protect NEW  PLAYERS, who may run into this during low player count time zones during cursory explorations of the server, be unable to access the ONLY safe hold on the entire server and give up.

The server has a steep learning curve, and I agree it's for good reason. But some thought needs to be given to new PLAYERS, who may find this a bit to "taxing" to just be able to poke around a bit.

Evaenir

I agree with them. For the new players, they should be given at least a chance to enter Mistlocke for free once. (A sympathy pass, it has been called on the chat) Of course, players could wander through the lands, find another safe haven, like meeting a druid at the scars, or if they are darn lucky, reach the Conclave or Auld Wyrm Hearth. However, let's keep in mind that if it starts too tough for new players, it may discourage then. EFU is tough, and there will be tenacious players who will still try to gather the needed money, meet someone outside of the gates, etc. but creating an in-game law that will turn off the motivation of a portion of new players isn't a good thing for the server, to my opinion. To repeat what I said at the beginning, they should be given to enter the town for free at least just once. You know, they don't miss what they don't know, so let them know how cool Mistlocke is!

Easier solution, remove the shop in the Ziggerat nobody uses. No place to spend 10 gold.

Pigadig

Some new players for RP reasons might decide to get of all their gold given the circumstances of their PC's arrival. Don't ask me why, but I've known some people like that.

Far better to give people a free pass than cloud their opinion of the server as a place that charges them entry to safety at level 3. Because almost certainly there will be new players that arrive in Mistlocke, see that they have 10 gp, get asked for all their gold as a toll, and will then turn around and try to explore the wilderness which will almost certainly lead to their demise. Some might stick around after that, a lot probably won't.

Halfblood MSN used to say "Throw rocks at cats while smoking fatties", from which I drew a lesson that doesn't in any way apply logic to this topic. Still, people smoke fatties to lighten up a little. It helps them to stop overcomplicating matters and turn them into unlikely problems. So guys, smoke a fatty. It's okay!

Now that had nothing to do with this discussion.

I believe he's saying your making mountains out of molehills. Which you are. In my opinion.

I get wanting to 'nip an issue in the butt', and I agree that EFU has a steep learning curve.  I can also suggest that perhaps a conversation is added for a one time pass on the coin.  Something like "I've just been dragged here and you want to charge me what?".  Once you use it on a character, that conversation is dead to you.  It shouldn't be to hard.. I mean Plowman calls out your name the first time you pass him.

Just thinking about what a person would do after being dragged to a hostile, withering land then being asked to pay for entry to (one of ) the only safe zones.

I don't think the suggestion is Game breaking.  I don't think it warrents some of the rebuttle comments either.

Halfbrood

That is paraphrased, but the sentiment is there!

I think this is something that should be looked into of course, but I also think this thread is mad in relation to the size of the problem. This is not a major issue and everyone should just chill out lol

Halfbrood

Also... Isn't the phrase 'nip it in the bud'... Butt...

lovethesuit

How about hints in the dialogue about alternate ways to get in, and bluff/persuade options to get in without paying? Someone else also said that having the "Explore Mistlocke" quest in the journal could serve as a first free pass, which will be friendly to new characters.

Calixto

I can agree with those who want the toll changed.

I can also agree with those who don't... If they remember their first days on the server and can say for certain it wouldn't have bothered them :p
Most enjoyable characters:

EFU: COR
Tristan Caerfal (NG Human Sharpshooter)

EFU:R
Thomas Valentine (Human NG Fighter/Rogue)
Durga (Half-Orc NE Cleric of Ilneval/Fighter)

EFU:M
Marion Sileyna (Human LN Cleric of Loviatar/Fighter)
Atreia Kelten (Human Paladin of Tyr)
Riku (NG Stargazer Ranger)

Heavyfog

My first days on the EFU server (THE EFU) were spent watching my characters get eaten by Fire Beetles. About a week later The Appetite (or something) showed up and made everyone leave the Underdark or die. A toll wouldn't have phased me a bit tbh. ;)
