Disable Mechanical Requirements on PrC's

I've seen this on other servers, and think it's amazing.

Essentially, when you disable all mechanical requirements for PrC's it allows people to build their concepts, and not force a concept into the mechanical restrictions of a PrC. A mage can become a Divine Champion of Mystra. A CG harper concept can take assassin levels, etc...

In a very low magic setting like this, access to certain PrC abilities to soon in level could produce unbalancing side-effects, but in the situations where a PrC is earned and given, the DM's can work the players who've earned the right to take the new class to ensure nothing super OP results.

Thoughts?

I think this was tried but unfeasible without intrusive and somewhat clumsy haks.

I know the server I saw it on managed it, and their implementation did not force downloads on the players. Not sure how though, I'm not a programmer. Possibly something behind the scenes.

This would be really cool on certain classes [such as shifter, wouldn't need to be a nature-based concept, could almost be a bloodmage-like class in terms of requirements], but on others such as weapon master [where gettingn the crit modifier and range additive would be far more attainable] it seems unhandy.

It would be cool on assassins, shifters, maybe removing the elf requirement on arcane archer [it isn't elven archer, after all], blackguard [because earning blackguard shouldn't be about your build, but rather the extensively hard plots you have to go through to earn the class], that's about it, imo.

I don't know. With everyone having War-Cry, Ki Damage, Final Stand and the like just willy nilly, it sounds like something dumb would happen real fast.

Agreed, but removing mechanical requirements doesn't discount the need to apply for and earn the PrC's. DM's will still regulate the approval of these classes, and the players who get them will have shown to the DM team they have the ability to handle the responsibility.

The difference is the ability to really open concepts up like noted above.

A shifter could be a Blood-mage, instead of a druid. An assassin can be good aligned. Arcane Archers could be human. A musterman who has established a legendary reputation could be awarded with levels in Dwarven Defender Mistlocke Defender.

Tons of new opportunities.

It has already been stated that the number of people who like or dislike an idea is of no consequence in determining whether a suggestion is deemed feasible by the DM team.

With that said, the idea does not seem to be game breaking, as the concepts will still require an application and approval. It seems like it would be a boon to potential concepts, but still a munchkin's min-max dream regardless.

Highly in favor of adjusting them myself, especially some of the more silly requirements.

I recall that efforts were made in the past to change the mechanical requirements, but I never heard anything about removing them altogether. That's kind of neat! It's less restrictive, allowing for different builds, but more importantly it really opens up a world of possibilities for mixing and matching backgrounds and tossing the idea of what defines a class up in the air. I've often thought that a monk would make a fine weapon master with a staff, but it's not been the most likely thing to happen. This could be the ticket.

I think this is fantastic idea! ive played on other servers with this and its been quite awesome. Now as to good assassins and the like, morals come into play and such is why the DM regulation is as always necessary. However i think it would be cool. And would create many more concept possibilities and create some great rp.

Tweaking the prereqs might be a good idea. In terms of removing them completely, I don't think the merits outweight the faults.

Yeah, I like that the PrCs are kind of specific rather than just a generic bonus for if you think your PC deserves it. There are a lot of people who defend, there are a lot of archers, there are a lot of people who kill other people, but the PrCs are characterful and cool. I'd agree with getting rid of or altering a lot of the mechanical pre-reqs, but not with getting rid of the flavour behind the PrCs that makes an arcane archer or a harper scout specific.

It is possible without any haks. CoA has done it, and they don't even use xNwN.
