An Investigation into the Consequences and Effects of the Consumption of Withered Meat
The following is a report of the clinical trial under review by the physicians of the Last Keep as conducted by the Waterdhavian Academy's Preston Aldrick and associates, commenced circa 7th Ches, 1382 DR.
Medical Examiner:
Lord Balthasar III Ehrenhas; 7th Ches, 1382
Method:
The procedure was conducted in the spirit of the good intentions of the deceased hunter and citizen of Mistlocke who brought game to share with the needy, whose withered game was subsequently used in the tests. A series of examinations was conducted by Physician Aldrick to test the quality and immediate risks of cooked flesh from visibly withered game.

The objective was to prove that meat from withered beast does not cause immediate risks nor accentuate the Withering curse within those who consume it.

The first test involved the application of divine healing, remove curse spells, and restorations, which revealed no change in the cooked withered meat.

This was followed up by three separate tests on three different subjects. Each subject consumed as much of the meat as they were able and reported no negative consequences thereafter, nor did they show any unusual signs within the following hour. The most distressing result reported was that the meat tasted 'a little bland.'

At this point, Preston concluded that the meat was safe for consumption and decided to donate the meat among the village. Which is where this medical examiner intervened.
Intervention and Procedural Control:
Full credit is given to physician Aldrick for the design of this experimental study, the initiative for undertaking it, and the willingness to see it through. It is important that effort is made to understand the machinations of the Maiden if Ymph is to ever overcome her rotten grasp. However, his intention to donate the foodstuffs, as well meaning as it may have been, was prematurely executed.

Should there yet be negative consequences of ingesting withered flesh which develop beyond the time frame examined in his experiments or longer term side effects associated with repeated consumption, these ills may be contagious and in such a case would prove disastrous for the hamlet, given the currently cramped living conditions of the majority.

As a pre-emptive measure, this trial is extended, and two of the three men [Talthorn Cynnaralt and Preston Aldrick] involved in the original procedure have consented to follow up examinations, as well as submitting themselves to further ingestion of the meat samples.
Examiner's Notes:
Talthorn Cynnaralt and Preston Aldrick are commended on their willingness to aid the understanding of this topic and their contributions to the field of Medicine. All game, even that within the shroud possesses some iota of H'Bala's touch, and should this study be able to prove without doubt that the curse itself does not spread through consumption alone, it may be possible to develop additional preparation methods to increase the availability of edible food on Ymph.

There are concerns in regards to a clash this procedure has with medical theory. In particular the theory of contaminant accumulation which would suggest that unless digestive processes are capable of denaturing said contaminant, it will diffuse into the cardinal humours and bile indefinitely. Allowances are made to enable this study, however, as even now after over four years, the Withering is still poorly understood.
