Bedding In

Hello Mistlocke! I’ve been a fringe player of EfU for the past week and made numerous attempts in the past to join the community permanently. Unfortunately, I’m struggling to “bed in” and break the wall of resistance that is my attention span.

Having played a similar server in Arabel for nearly seven years now I come from a scenario where I know the setting intimately, I can dive into a concept knowing my bearings and what I can and cannot do. Mistlocke, however,  is very much the opposite. It’s new, it’s challenging, it’s all a bit alien.

But, such is my resolve to board this particular cloud of heaven I thought I might turn to those that call it home and plea for some words of wisdom and sage advice.

How did you first get involved in EfU? How did you make the leap from home soils to foreign turf? From old to new? What tips of the trade can you offer? Anything that would help me would be thoroughly appreciated.

I joined EFU about 3 years ago, having played roughly seven years on Amia. A former DM their convinced me to give it a try, after he saw another of my posts asking the player base to embrace a permadeath setting.

My arrival here, was great. Within 10 minutes, I was met by two infamous characters. Who both, scared the crap out of me and welcomed me with open arms. My first character, was a concept I had played for years. It was familiar, in that I knew what I wanted to do, how to roleplay him and more importantly it was nice and safe.

Within three weeks he was dead, after plotting and backstabbing. His death was an assasinsation, something I had always wanted to be able to do on Amia.

Part of me was upset, I didnt think I could enjoy EFU the same way by making another character. The truth is, I cant, those first weeks are something I will always cherish. But, that was three years ago, and for someone who didnt think he could enjoy the server, I think I can safely say im more than a little addicted!

My advice to you is, look around for people to join. Going alone is tough, and can be very lonely. But we have associations, and player factions which will give you a deeper understanding of the server.

Play something you feel safe playing, be it a criminal mastermind, a simple thug, an entertaining bard with a love of women, or a crusader against undead.

Send tells to players, if your looking to learn more, and dont be afraid to talk to the DM's.

Try to get involved in a major faction. :)

Well, the tricks of the trade are simple! Just need to stay on your toes and be prepared my friend. Now, if you need a concept or the like. There are a great many places you can look to see if people are recuiting and, when in doubt jump into things, the worest that can happen is dieing! xD

Also! Make a few test characters on efu, get a grasp of the server its quests and populace, and then make  your true "Lets get down to biss-ness Char"

I suppose the major obstacle I’m having difficulty hurdling is knowing where the bare essentials are ~ I.E. lower level quests, your go-to merchants, your inns, your shady corners and hangouts. I’m very conscious however that learning them in any other fashion than IG might deprive me of some integral EfU experience and fun.

Incidentally, is anyone presently keen to burden themselves with an understudy? I think being shown the ropes as it were by a veteran would go a long way to alleviating my troubles and setting me on the path to EfU japes.

vonRothbart, when are your play times?

vonRothbart

I'm just north of London, so GMT. Typically play 7pm until about midnight weekdays, more flexible weekends.

RuinedDesires

feel free to pm me on irc, crytalos. I'm more than willing to help a new guy out

Sounds like you need to find a friendly loremaster in-game to show you around the place! My character, would not be opposed to such a thing if you want to take that route, it is entirely feasible for him to ICly show a portal rat the secrets of Mistlocke; if they ask nicely.

When I first started, all I did was make a concept and played it, eventually I was tied into an awesome PC faction which had historical depth in the setting with wonderful plot goals, without even realising it, truly like being swept off one's feet. It was a unique opportunity I came into without knowing a thing of what it entails to play a character in a persistent world setting.

From this experience, what I might be able to share as advice is to look for characters in-game who have similar goals to your own. All the rest will surely evolve from the roleplay following the collaboration.

I do not feel you need to know what can or cannot be done to ground your concepts. It is more about engaging with your fellow players and shooting for the sky and if you do it well enough, you might even reach the heavens.

It is through Art, and through Art only, that we can realise our perfection.

The quests are relatively easy to find, you just need to look around a little.  Right click and examine every NPC you see if you must, within town there are lots of NPC quest givers.

A great way to get involved is by joining and faction Player or DM led and basing a concept around the goals they are pushing.  After you get familiar with the server it's often best to come up with goals and fit them to a faction, but to begin with simply going along for the ride is a good way to have fun and see the server.

I'm currently playing in roughly your timezone so shoot me a tell IG if you need a hand or have any questions, my character is "Leopold Handelsson".

Welcome to EfU, sir!

I would highly recommend joining a non-app organization (Mayor's Muster = kind of a guard force, then there is Aberdenn and Caermyn. It depends which would fit your concept best) if you wish to get to know the server in depth. Otherwise, don't worry about sending a tell to some players IG asking for help. They may sound grumpy or respond slowly (because of some ongoing RP that takes up their concentration, of course) but the entire EfU community is rather excellent and willing to help new players, so don't be afraid to ask them/us any of your questions.

If you'd post what your current PC/username is, I will absolutely send you a tell IG if I see you and offer my help.

I personally knew EfU is the place for me when my PC old barely an hour got beaten up and interrogated for hanging out with the bad guys.
What I -really- recommend is bothering someone IC until they show you all the lowbie quests in Mistlocke. If someone tells you to look around town, just bother someone again until you are specifically shown where they are. I didn't know about 70% of the newbie quests for about two months because I didn't bother to find out back then.

EFU is a harsh and brutal place and can be tough to learn. I try to always keep a low level throwaway alt hidden somewhere specifically to help new people get settled in when I'm not doing something. Perhaps the best way to learn the server is stick with a mentor. Have someone take you in under their wing, show you around and teach you the ropes.

TheMacPanther

I would agree with the suggestions to join a player or non-app faction first to get the hang of things. That, or you will usually find a group of people that you will tend to quest with just based off your playtime that can show you around.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask.
