Actually for most quests the payout overall is more in a smaller group as it doesn't have to split so far, plus the challenge goes up with a larger group. The issue with the bounties is that a larger group gets more profit and less risk as each person uses fewer supplies.

However, the flip side of this is it encourages involving more people, which is a good thing.
