I'll echo what others have said about not being discouraged if you run into rough times in the beginning; Death and combat can be pretty harsh on the server until you figure things out, but the story and roleplay is above all else, so it's definitely worth it to stick to it!

If you need help once you start playing, most people will be very happy to offer it, in IRC or via in-game tells, as long as you're respectful about it. IRC is a great place to hang out and get answers to your questions - There's always a veteran or two with nothing else to do that happily help you out. And if you run into a tough spot in the beginning while online, most people will be happy to go out of their way to aid you. Keep in mind though that many people feel it's a bit immersion-breaking with Out-of-character tells. That being said, though, just mention you're new and that you might need a bit of help, and most are glad to oblige if they can.
