Hello there.

I've tried this server for a couple of days and gotta say i'm loving it!

Rp is great, the quests are alot of fun!

But wait ... my character died yesterday in two hits with some jaguar that pounced on it just out of the city gates.

The xp loss is really harsh but I can live with that...

Complete inventory wipe???? What???

Now that's harsh. And there's no way I could have gotten my stuff back with that deadly jaguar in the way.

So that means my char is stuck at level 3 with zero gold and zero equipment, not even a small weapon to defend himself...

Is it always like that? I mean, you can play for months and months, saving up gold and then you're killed once and lose EVERYTHING????

Heelllp...

Hi, welcome to EfU. Sorry you had some difficulties.

When you die, your inventory does indeed drop at the feet of your corpse, but that certainly doesn't mean it's gone for good.

It's best to group with other PCs in dangerous areas, so they can kill the monsters and then you can respawn to your corpse.

In the event that you're alone, you can respawn to the city, and either beg an invisibility potion or get someone to help you. Most players would be happy to do so, particularly if it's clear that you're a new player.

There's also the option of using the DM channel to request that the DMs move away a monster so you can respawn to the corpse, which if we're free we'll generally help with.

It's also a particularly good idea as a new player to join a faction. Factions always need more people, and henchmen are very fun to play in my experience. It's also simpler and far less stressful. Your faction (be it a PC faction or a DM faction requiring an application) will generally do what they can to help you get used to EfU's generally higher difficulty when compared to other servers, and even equip you to an extent.

At level 3, though, getting gold back is generally easy. Go around the Ziggurat and do the 'newbie quests,' most of them are non-combat delivery quests. Stick to these and you'll make 100-200 easy and be able to afford replacement gear. After that, go out and quest with people. Keep an ear out for sendings.

Welcome to EfU. :)

Welcome to the server.  As Howland said, don't be afraid to ask other characters to help you out.  Most will gladly do so, some even if it means breaking character.  We've all been there at one time or another.

Oh, the command IG for the Dm channel is "/dm",

Have fun and see ya IG.

Thanks! And oddly...as a masochist I feel like....coming back for more!

I suppose i'll get the hang of it.

Oh, and we can do the newbie quests several times?

And...how do we get characters in our level range to do quests with us? As asking someone's "level" certainly is ooc....

You can do any quest within your level range once per reset. The most common method for recruiting other players for questing is through a sending, which is a magical message sent to everyone near or in the settlement with a sending stone (or in the case of the docks sending system, just everyone within range). An example sending is as follows:
"Hello, everyone. Listen up! There's some problems in the Granary, goblins have broken in and are stealing all our food! Adventurers, please meet me outside Kingsman's, where we will organize a proper resistance against these monsters. ((Lv. 2-6))"
The little "((Lv. 2-6))" at the end is an OOC note, and though sendings themselves must be IC, placing a little OOC note on what levels may participate is perfectly acceptable.

Sometimes people are just busy with other things, too high level, or rather uninterested in the quest you want to do, though. It can be a real pain at times getting others to quest with you.

I may add, that I read somewhere on the forum, that when you restart any previously completed group quest, you should treat it as like you are doing it for the first time.
It really is a good rule.

Some hints I could add:
- nights are more dangerous, than days. More and stronger enemies may appear in more unstable areas, like wilderness.
- don't go too far from the city if you don't know the area. Take some companions with you for longer trips, for both safety and fun.
- drink potions. Yes, use them, and a lot of them, barskin and few additional atribute points may save your life.
- try not to buy much from the vendors, many useful items tend to drop from enemies. If you go on a group quest, you will get plenty of them, and at the same time, save money for more roleplaying reasons and to buy useful items from players.
- don't sell to vendors. Try to find other players for trading, this way you will not only earn more money, but help the players (they will buy cheaper).

I do hope this helps.

I can't stress this enough; It is probably one of the best survival tips you will get! One of the main differences of this server compared to many others is that you are expected to use consumables of all kinds in order to survive. Consumables are rather plentiful, but they do you absolutely no good if they sit unused in your backpack while you lay bleeding in the dirt. And unlike other servers/settings, using them even for "regular enemies" is definitely wise. Saving up for "that super-strong boss" or "that pvp encounter" will most of the time simply lead to you getting killed before you even reach them. :) Of course, if you have a super-powerful item, it is wise to conserve it for a special occasion, but for regular, common stuff, make a habit of using it.

Other than that, as has been said before, don't hesitate to ask for help OOCly if there is something troubling you; Just drop a line saying you're new and that you need some support, and most people would just be happy to help.

And welcome aboard! It's totally worth it.

chezcaliente

All of the above advice is perfectly sound, so I won't repeat any of it. And yes, most people are fine with a break in immersion if the person making an ooc request is new and just needs help.

Welcome!

Welcome!

Stick with it, too and don't get disheartened! There is so much to find out and discover - as said before me if there are any questions just ask, both the DM team and playerbase are great.

Another useful tip is to check the new arrivals towers surplus gear chest (as you exit Kingsmans Inn its on the right).

Its where PC's dump unwanted items and its very useful to new characters to get some free basic (or not quite so basic) stuff.
