Make some Flameberry / Iceberry items available within Herbalism please.

Yes!  Entice folks to actually risk that XP loss by actually putting their ACs on the line!!!

Though maybe not QUITE that powerful...

prestonhunt

I'm sure they could tweak the effect, yes.

The Beggar

Only so you can make new CoolAid flavors through Cooking skill.

Coldburn

Won't Awakening, (Greater) Magic Fang and generic buffs already make Animal Companions strong enough? I don't mind a little something extra, or the idea but there's already spells out there that strengthen Companions.

It does turn them into monsterous creatures, yes. In addition the animal companions have neat special abilities on efu once you get high enough. I recall even with my dire bear form my pet was still stronger than I was when buffed with awakening and greater magic fang.

Also as for "risking xp's through using AC's" the death of an animal companion incurs minimal xp penalty. It's not something I'd be massively worried about ooc'ly, especially since pets have massive hunks of hp and can be unsummoned as a free action.

SmashingGiants

Currently death of AC incurs a 400 xp penalty ;)

Egon the Monkey

I was sure it's 200. It's been upped?

The Dms have stated they frown heavily on snap-unsummoning companions just to stop them dying. They are supposed to not be risked unnecessarily. Trouble is, on a lot of quests they are not worth it as the AI is stupid and they don't use potions by themselves (Can't get the lids off can they? ;)). So, you need a PC to babysit it with healing devices. Their damage and utility in combat is undeniable, but their lack of self-healing makes them a glass cannon.

I've used companions in PVP and mob hunting before. They are vicious buffed with just Magic Fang and a couple of pots, and the haste +  elemental dmg for several turns would be OP. Remember you can drag  potions onto them or their pics and they will drink. Mage Armor is  especially good. They're simple to buff offensively and defensively, but it's keeping their health up that's harder. You're not like a necromancer who can just sit back spamming healing on his goons at range. Druids and Rangers are combat classes.

I would love to see a common/craftable device that applies a good amount of regen to a companion, say +2-3 for a few turns as a "fire and forget" consumable to keep them alive through quests. Powerful yes, but they don't use healing. This would let you leave them to it for a couple of rounds at a time without worrying they'll get overwhelmed.

Pro tip:

Dragging potions from your inventory to the Animal Companion/ Familiar/ Summon's 'portrait' on the right side under your own portrait, allows them to drink it at the same rate PCs do; 2 per round. So there's not necessarily a need for you to use Healing Devices on it. The PCs dragging the potions is the one who gets the AoOs, not the Companion IIRC, who can just continue to use his entire round attacking.

Egon the Monkey

True, but that means you have to back it up and give up your own attacks for that round, as well as a chance for you to heal. You effectively end up playing 2 PCs. It's always been best for me to have an invis mage or someone heal it for me. A regen defice would let you apply it in advance.

This topic has side tracked a bit. I'll simply say that there may already be something/things that have similar desired effects.

I'm pretty sure the oppisite was stated when this exact topic was brought up. The dm's felt players were bieng too harsh when they said this very thing.
