Relinquish

I don't want to sound all bitchy. But I just find it extremely weird that slaves are out and about acting no different from a citizen. They get more respect I notice from real citizens. I never see them get treated like slaves, by anyone. Discuss?

Twelve

Agreed... for my own PC (A stygian infantryman) he never calls slaves by their name.  He doesn't belittle them or anything like that, but that is the only difference I give them.

As I understood it Slave back in the day, was more a social status than a disrespectful title.

If I like a slave, I'll show it respect.  Just because I treat it with respect doesn't mean it isn't below me and mine to command.

I think it depends on the perspective of slavery here too; the gladiators were heavily glorified in roman culture, but still were basically set to their death while given a smile.

The slaves of the Persian empire was more of a way to pay for a debt or crime, and the slaves of latest history were just treated as property.

So, it's sort of understandable gladiators get a little more "oh, and ah"

Uh.. Slaves have always been treated as property, historically.

I was hoping to see public beatings and such ontop of the ziggurat of the slaves, not more "There is a ruined tower to plunder, please accompany me"

Bearic

I meant just as property recently, before you have indentured servants and other loopholes that had slaves not just as slaves. Hammurabi's code, for instance, had people as slaves for a short period to pay a debt:

"117. If any one fail to meet a claim for debt, and sell himself, his wife, his son, and daughter for money or give them away to forced labor: they shall work for three years in the house of the man who bought them, or the proprietor, and in the fourth year they shall be set free."

In situations like this it wasn't all about conqured peoples being forced into shackles, but friscal standings or people's desire to fit a certain nitch. Still property, but with more to it than simple ownership.

I meant in the real world, not EFU. But, you may be right. However, it's somewhat difficult to properly portray the life of a slave for PCs, not to mention boring.

Shamtastic

From what I have seen, it is more about those owners of the slaves being very hands off, then the slaves. They take as much freedom as they are given, by those supposed to own them.  This current crop simply has a very long leash?

Craig210

As a slave player, I think it all depends on the owners. A slave will push until he knows his limits, and depending on the slaves backstory he may think he can leave at any time.

Freedom of speach and most actions is a good thing, but i know for me at least this came at a heavy price. A limit on gold i could walk with at all times, and some other seriously heavy prices IG.

Just because a slave appears to be one thing, does not mean he isnt still under the iron fist in other forms.

It is sorta strange to see the treatment of slaves recently from my end. As a person who has played a slave and slave owner along with a good deal of time studying Classic history and culture to me it comes down as a few simple things.

1: Slaves aren't people. Slaves, even favored gladiators or house slaves in ancient Rome were still not considered people until they were freed (and freed slaves were still below born citizens socially) and freedom was never always a possibility.

2: Slaves don't own property. Again, while favored slaves were sometimes given gifts or leniency with possessions, they by no means owned anything they had. Everything they had belonged to their master/mistress.

3: Slaves are below everyone. As a slave you are the lowest caste in a regimented caste society. Even the one legged starving beggar on the corner is considered your social better, and he knows that.

:This is just my opinion, feel free to counter or argue as you please:

The Beggar

There was once a class of famous slave fighters that were quite well treated by the public, even adored. Rich women paid to get a little closer to them in the middle of the night, people even bought their sweat after a match to make into a perfume that was used as an aphrodesiac. They were recognized, they were showered with gifts--the good ones that is.

I think the respect and notoriety of our gladiators is well deserved atm, especially given the RP I have seen from some of them over the last week.

Porkolt

Some people are breaking the mold with their PC.

This is hardly cause for alarm.

And what is said of slave/citizen attitude can also be said about citizen/patrician/noble attitude.

We're just really not used to hierachical social structures, which is even harder to grasp when we're all playing  a badass adventurers.

Show some respect for your superiors, damnit!

Hey, if we all can take on a bunch of orcs like a group of Spartans taking on the Persians in the (movie) portrayal of Thermopolyae in 300, we're all bros in adventuring, ain't we?
