Trouble with current plotline.

I'm having some serious personal problems with current plotline on the server.

I should explain. LiS, doubtless with the best of intentions, left Albrecht Bron to my character Karrin Connell in Samantha White's will. I did not have the opportunity to either think this over or discuss it OOCly with LiS before Samantha died, leaving the whole thing a fait accompli. If I had been a little quicker on the uptake I would have asked LiS OOCly to change Samantha's will at once; ICly Karrin never wanted a slave and in fact strongly dislikes slavery and OOCly I have severe personal issues with slavery that makes it hard for me to deal with it if I am too closely involved with it in any way.

The problem facing me now is this: ICly Karrin now has Albrecht Bron in her legal possession, seeing him not as an asset but as a (to her mind) severely damaged person she is responsible for. He has been a slave all his life and does not even want to be free -- which is realistic enough for slaves conditioned with sufficient brutality. To Karrin's mind, merely passing him on to another owner is unthinkable as it would leave Bron at the whim of further unthinking abuse, possibly for the rest of her life. The task of teaching him to be free is a severely daunting one and if she fails in that she will have to be responsible for him for the rest of his (or possibly her) life. On top of all this, Bron is seeking Izzy's life. To finish it off, people are now yelling at Karrin for being a slaver.

I might be able to handle all of the above... but the sad and sorry truth is that I am not having fun with it. This isn't a game situation to me, it is a nightmare scenario, and I feel less and less inclined to log on with Karrin at all. In short, I feel painted into a corner RP-wise. And I don't know what to do about it, so I am explaining matters here and hope people will forgive me for defaulting on what is technically an RP issue.

I hate asking the involved parties for either a retcon or some OOC deus ex machina, but it is either that or retire Karrin from play. I see no satisfactory IC resolution to this at all nor even the hope of one. Sorry.

Sorry if I added to this for you. Don't worry to much about it. Izzy will be fine, or dead, I'm alright with either option.

I fully understand that there are times that IC things get to us OOC'ly, the best thing to do is find a way IC'ly to deal with it, otherwise it is never resolved.

Karrin could petition the Lords to set Bron free. She could find someone that she thinks might help him and ask them to see to his well being. She could just ignore the fact that she 'owns' him and go about her business.

Karrin is a well developed character and I would hate for you to just give up on her because of an IC situation.

I got to say as well, this is fully IC matter. I do not see the problem. You can deal with in character. It's not all meant to be rosy and dandy in the life of a concept, and this just happens to be one type of a challenge.

Well, normally I would agree this is a strictly IC issue, but Slavery is one of those prickly "Happens in RL" things that some people might take particular offense to, such as torture or rape. From that angle I can see how that would make someone uncomfortable.

That being said, if the DM's do provide a solution, it might not be one you particularly like. I say, just hang in there dear, I went through the same thing with Aeliolia (aquired a slave, couldn't free him). If it's any consolation, Bron is so pro dominion and proactive, you could address this ICly and write to the Duke, requesting he be freed for his loyalty and countinued labors.

At which point you lose the ability to influence his actions and protect others from him entirly, but free yourself of personal guilt

Anyway. It's an IC issue. Think you should be happy that someone was willing to play a slave PC and not quit it after 2 hours.

I assume that you have asked for help IG already and this is why you are asking here OOC?

Perhaps you haven't asked enough people or have asked the wrong questions. Keep trying.

For me, having known people who have died due to drug OD or otherwise screwing up their lives, hearing people talk of drugs in the Docks suck, and so far I have been able to ignore that crap for the most part.
BUT slavery is a big part of EFUA, as well as EFU. It is harder to ignore and I think that it is important part of the server as something that many PC's would be against.

I would suggest that you find the answers IG now that others are aware of your concerns as you know people like to help each other out.

It seems like you're making an issue out of nothing, here. If your character is in a bad situation, RP it out. That is part of the fun of the game; seeing things not go well in spite of your best efforts. Sometimes you are just backed into a corner IC - I don't see the OOC negativity in this, if you feel this way I'd suggest you take some time to examine how you view the boundries between IC and OOC.

There is sometimes never a 'satisfactory IC solution' to issues that leaves your character exactly where you want them to be - EfU is not some fanfiction where everything can be tied up neatly in a bow, it is a mature server where sometimes things just go to shit. This process should be entertaining.

On another note, I'd also question people who are crying about slavery in a setting where to most people it would be second nature, or at least accepted as part of the status quo.

You could always petition to a Lord for the slave to be transferred to the legal person of the Dominion. Seems like a cool solution for all sides to me since Bron would remain a slave, yet in the spirit of the Dominion which I'd assume your character can trust.
