QuoteThis skill was reduced from its original (pre-release) state and is considerably less effective than it may sound. Parry can only deflect the first attack in each of the three flurries  in a round (for example, parrying an opponent with 5 attacks per round will only attempt to block the first, third, and fifth attacks).

I see little reason for this to be in effect on this server. I imagine this was changed to keep monks who can get up to 10 attacks per round from being completely invincible against enemy fighters, or to keep it from being useful at high levels (the latter of which being a completely retarded reason). Anyway, this has a few unintended problems with it. My character, Orlando Devonshire, has a really awesome high parry, but often things that should not be able to hit him except on very high rolls hit him even on low rolls, and I've discovered that this is because of this change to each flurry.

There are three flurries in each round, they are essentially attack phases, and your number of attacks per round is split up evenly between them. However, not all flurries are evenly split up, and this results in some attacks that should be parry-able to no longer be so. For instance, earlier today I fought an Ogre Bandit, and it rolled a 26. I have a 28 parry (nice parry gear, all the feats, max ranks, high dex... I have invested heavily in this and it is my main weapon in any combat), meaning even if I roll a 1, they still have to roll a 29 or higher. Despite this being 3 lower than what it needed, it still hit me, even though it was only the second attack that round, and I have two attacks per round, myself (you can parry a number of attacks up to how many attacks per round you have).

Please, if this is in any way possible, please change it to no longer take flurries into consideration when parrying, and just parry a number of attacks up to how many APR you have, as it was when it was originally released. This makes it nearly useless against anyone with more than one attack per round, due to the flurries not working properly (essentially, they will always have more attacks per round than me, it just slows down the inevitable as dedicated parry-ers typically have a low AC).

Conan The Conqueror

Question, did you riposte after the first attack by the Ogre? If so, I don't think there is anything that you can do about this. After you make a riposte attack, you can no longer parry for that round. If you have 10 attacks a round, you can parry 10 attacks, but if you get a riposte on that first attack, you are essentially defenseless for the rest of that round aside from your AC.

That's really the downside of parry, the riposte attack. It's not so much about flurry of attacks or anything and just that riposte breaks the rest of your parry.

It's very similar to what happens with Circle Kick and Whirlwind attack. Often the perks of the skill/feat actually hurt you sometimes.

While I'm not 100% certain, I believe Parry is hardcoded, just like Taunt, Knockdown, and many other skills and feats.

There's just no way to change it!

Relinquish

Your parry skill =/= your AC. If it did I don't even....

But yeah, you won't be able to parry more than 1 attack/round when you only have 2 attacks/round, unless you dual wield.

GoblinSapper

Shame Parry couldn't have been hardcoded to add a bonus to AC when in parry mode, like tumble. The caveat being of course, you cannot attack only counter attack. Add tumble and you have a true swashbuckler with great ac but no real outright offensive power.

But, wish in one hand, shit in the other, etcetc.

To be honest, Expertise is a functional version of Parry (vaguely, at least).  If you're playing a riposter, you might want to try some Expertise instead.

ScottyB

Our inability to change parry has not changed since the last time this suggestion was made.

Egon the Monkey

Other servers have instead added a Tumble-like bonus to Parry, giving AC for every x ranks in it if you're using a light weapon and no shield. Is that feasible, Scotty?

Nightshadow

I like what Egon posted, but as next level I'll have a 30+ parry, it should only be active when parry mode is enabled, to counter out the bugginess. If I had a flat +6 AC all the time it'd be kind of ridiculous, when you take into account tumble, dex and armor. I'd say light armor only, maybe chain shirts, no shield unless it's a buckler/light shield (swashbuckler, eh?), you can dual wield but the off-hand must be a light weapon like a dagger.

But some change to improve parry's effectiveness would be awesome, as, well... It sucks that people can still hit me when they shouldn't be able to (rolling a 21 altogether on their second attack and hitting, when a 30+ is required). Keep in mind that parry does nothing against multiple enemies, archers, or mages, it's pretty much strictly for owning in 1v1 duels and it is even failing at that.

Conan The Conqueror

After tinkering aroun a bit, it seems that riposte was fixed some. You can parry after a riposte, but if you are fighting multiple enemies and riposte one you can not parry the other enemy that is attacking. That makes sense so not a big deal.

One of the biggest drawbacks of parry is that you can't year target healing while in parry mode.

This is technically possible (though clunky if it's made robust enough to avoid exploitation) but has been suggested before, with what I think was unanimous DM opposition.

Parry is for duels/duelists, not tanking.

Thomas_Not_very_wise

Perhaps such a script could be activated by a DM for excelling PCs who make use of their Parry effectively and amazingly well, granting them this AC bonus?

I will certainly design a sweet +AC off-hand dagger for my upcoming parry fighter, thank you for the suggestion.
