Gobs, Kobs, and...Stargazers?

Now I know back in the day we had Goblins and Kobolds taken off of app-only status, and for a while it was a thing that had potential. Obviously right now, goblins don't feature heavily in the events of the server. However, I think we ought to open up talks again about the pros and cons of allowing Goblins and Kobolds to be open subraces.

Further, I recall recent conversations about Stargazers also becoming non-app. I'd like to know what the DMs are thinking about that, and you folks as well.

For my own part, I like the idea of Goblins and Kobolds taking a more active role in the server. I'm very partial to the comedic aspect they carry. I myself would play a goblin or kobold, but really only if they were non-app. And as for Stargazers, I think being app-only is fine, if only because more is required of Stargazer characters in terms of their nature and beliefs. But, all the same, I'd like to know where the thoughts of the DMs currently stand on that issue.

Thomas_Not_very_wise

I'd be open to seeing Kobolds and goblins non-app again, as long as they are portrayed as the monsters they are.

UnholyWon

I support this having played at character that focused on Gobsquat. Need more goblin and kobold players running around.

Nightshadow

I would be in favor of this. At the very least I'd like to see goblins be non-app (seeing as how there's a major settlement right nearby), with maybe kobolds (also a major settlement nearby... where lowbies go to raid and plunder to get lots of xp and loot, lol) and stargazers as such as well.

Back when they (kobolds and goblins) were non-app I never really did notice much in the way of them not being monsters, though I was still trying to figure out the server and wasn't to the point yet where I ever thought 'You know, this monster guy, something's not right about him, why is he sipping wine in Kingsman's?' or things along those lines...

Considering there's supposedly thousands of goblins over in Gobsquat (or whatever it's called these days), it'd be nice if they were more common.

Ranek

Goblin, Kobolds and Stargazers, all should be very welcome in the server, and play an important part on it, hence the need of an app.

PlayaCharacter

Goblins and kobolds, yes, but Stargazers should always be app-only.

I agree with the above just to be clear. Stargazers should always be app only.

Letsplayforfun

I wouldn't mind goblins been open, though it would certainly not mean having them crawl all over the Ziggurat. They are monsters, however civilized they try/pretend/are forced by their boss to be.

Not kobolds as there's no 'friendly' kobold community nearby.

Stargazers are special.

Applications are definitely an obstacle here. I think I can speak for every single DM when I say that we'd much rather remove the need for them, but that's the problem -- we do need them. The koblin spam-fest in the Underdark was getting silly -- it had a notable impact on the economy, players were rolling up the same monster character over and over, and when somebody finally did stand out she would drown in the torrent of "bad" monsters.

It is similar for Stargazers. If we could trust that everyone who played a Stargazer would play it "right" there would be no application. Unfortunately, we cannot. There have not been many cases of rejected Stargazer applications, and usually they have only required minor adjustments, but there have been some.

Because of this, however, applying for either of these three amounts to ensuring us that you have even a basic grasp of the race in question, there is absolutely no need to impress.

wcsherry

Strongly opposed to this.

Monster PC's, as we saw in the past, simply encouraged moronically flippant PvP that resulted in constant killing of PC's in a way that is strictly in opposition to the storytelling we like to encourage on our persistent world.

They are best kept in low numbers, and through application only to avoid such silliness again in the future.

DollarPhil

Some of us remember when there were a lot of goblins turning up, and TNVW decided to make a 20 str halforc and sit at the top of the zig to kill any he saw.

Coldburn

I'll add my voice to the opposition. Back in the day, I rolled out 1 or 2 Goblins and Kobolds myself. I can safely say that it's a constant gank & re-gank situation, with most approaching stats that would be considered min-maxed to survive the continuing onslaught. While I would like to see more Goblins and Kobolds, I would only like to see responsible Goblin and Kobold players. I believe the DMs have already stated that Goblin/ Kobold applications are not hard to get approved; just show them that you have a basic understanding of how the races work, and how you will deal with conflict, and you don't need a server-changing goal.

Also; Stargazers non-app, I am strongly opposed. But here again, Stargazer applications are NOT hard. Just show that you know what being a Stargazer means, and you're in. Oh, and do this please. Make that app now!

Cerberus

I've never understood the concept of "play it right". Although I understand that vast majority of a race should be by the book stereotypical (in the 90 percentile), there are also those that break the mold (the PC). Not even going to get into the Drizzt topic but it goes all directions with all races and religions. We the players are not playing stereotypical characters of any race, be it human, wild elf or goblin. We are playing above average statistic "hero" types which is what the game is all about (though I've noticed most NPC's in EFU/A are above average too). To be told you are not playing your hero PC right, is to say we want you to be an NPC, not a PC, we want you to be a by the book, what everybody expects, boring member of that race or religion.

But then again I'm pretty sure this attitude of mine is why some people (mostly DM's) don't like my playing style.

Divine Intervention

Yes, I remember in early EFUA I had a goblin wizard, rather proud of him actually who ended up dying as a result of people trying to deal with all the bad goblins.

AKMatt

TBH, non-app kobolds were my favorite feature of EFU.
