Paha

It's only fair opinion. It's true, that a lot of that game talk, opinions of Ic situations and such could be taken into the game rather than go through it at irc. No harm in throwing the actual observation here and suggesting people to take it in game rather than go over it at irc.

putrid_plum

Nah Paha, suggesting things and saying something that is clearly true or bothering you can only be answered by rude flaming.  Welcome to what EFU has become.

Also I too find it a bit funny how some people have no time to play EFU but can chat on IRC for hours and hours.  Or the great amount of people who talk about in-game things on IRC basicly ruining the shock other peoples PCs might have learning about it the right way and discussing things like summoning themes and what does what, etc..

I agree with Caddies, I know it's scarey for me too... but really it's so true.

"I remember when people only really talked in IRC when they weren't playing their PCs; now its people play their PCs when they don't talk in IRC."

I don't enjoy the IRC drivel.

I don't get on IRC.

Only downside to this is after a year-plus of playing here.... I know very few players and DMs and getting involved in plots is difficult (NOT IMPOSSIBLE), as IRC is a key ingredient in becoming involved and getting to know people.

lolmagics

IRC has very little to do with getting into plots. That's all IC stuff.

Letsplayforfun

As a player i seldom ever came to IRC, it was more putting me off than anything. As a DM i log in and answer/ask EfU related stuff only.

Yet you can't blame/ban people for using IRC for idle chat, casual trolling or whatnot. It's part of the social life of any (youth oriented) community.

People have be warned already not to pushing the limits of trolling on this EfU channel though.

On a side note, if people choose to IRC rather than play, i'd like to know why, and how we could 'drag them back into the game'.

But it's probably just lack of time to get something started and finished, or people at work/school who need to be able to disconnect as soon as boss/teacher comes to have a look, i guess...

Some people, me included, just don't have interest in EfU anymore. Interests come and go. Those who won't play may or may not change their minds. Dragging them back to the game seems more forced than anything. It's just entertaining talking to the community, the people you have played with for years. I have played on some other servers without IRC, and it was difficult to feel any sorts of attachment because the only way to talk to people was through tells send once in a while. I think a large part of why EfU lasted so long is because there is more to it than just interacting in game.

Mort

Reminiscing about fun events, moments, characters is quite enjoyable.

#efu should be about that. Perhaps being less critical of other characters (guilty as charged!) and just finding at least one positive aspect to them as an effort to stray away from trolling, angst, who wins, etc.

Help for character development. How to use the information you can collect from novels, movies, real life and incorporate it into your character so they dont become cliché, but feel unique and well thought out.

Less convos on mechanics of AC, AB... etc. When I started, I think DMs (crosswind, thrawn?) banned these kinds of convos in the channel. Kinda useful in redirecting the conversation unto something more interesting and less superficial. We dont want to appear as an Antiworld team fortress server after all.

Mort

Also, it's clear that the community is a major part of the gameworld. People are sad when someone leaves... happy when an oldbie returns. So IRC does have this appeal of keeping in touch with others.

Kiaring

I do not want to curb freedoms.

I am aware I can just leave IRC if I want. This is what I have done.

My point is simple: To me, IRC is an accessory to the gameworld, and it has been sort of taking the foreground due to a number of reasons. Leaving it and using it only when strictly necessary is probably a better idea.

Setting up a channel that isn't EfU related, even if it is filled with people you met through EfU, is an elegant solution.

Finding people who are not on IRC is not that easy. I think I'll stay logged on; if you want to chat, /msg Kiaring.
