Docks Communal Fund

We started a charity fund in the docks. Its purpose is to sponsor independent businesses, employ people and pay for public construction.

The idea was that people could donate, and then money could be easily withdrawn when it was needed. That's why donation bowls don't work.

Right now, Windbag is holding onto the gold. However, I won't be around forever. He could be robbed or he could die, and there goes the gold even if it's not actually on him IC.

So I'm looking for solutions, here. A DM suggested that I ask for a banking system for this.

One option would be to add a bank into the Docks that had only one account, and it could be accessed by a selection of PCs who were given authority via a token. Anyone could maybe deposit, but only authorised people could withdraw.

Or it could be simply a bank with one public account, but so that the banker is locked up in the Sons HQ and outsiders couldn't access him. This is somewhat more risky and ties it closely to the Sons. Neither of these solutions would have a (notable) charge, of course, because it's a charity thing.

Or it could be a much easier solution that I haven't thought of. The bottom line is, it's supposed to be easily accessible when it's needed, so DMs holding onto the gold may be somewhat tricky. Simply a box that can store gold in the Sons HQ would be enough, I bet.

I'm assuming the Sons already have persistent storage. Why not just put it in there?

Snoteye

Persistent storage does not store gold for balance reasons.

Barehander

Something like that would be enough, if it could only be limited to the community fund. Obviously, it couldn't be used to store your own gold free of charge. I do keep tabs on the balance on the forums, so it could be checked at any time. I'm not sure the DMs would be happy to just trust players with it, though.

TheImpossibleDream

I would imagine ic'ly you would still have the gold on you if you've not approached anybody to safeguard the fund for you. May be the best option.

Barehander

Well, it's supposed to be in the Sons HQ, the same place where all of his other stuff can be kept locked up. And ironically the fact that he had a place to take it for safekeeping was why he was chosen to tend to it. And I was hoping this might carry on after my PC is gone, too, if we manage to set up something interesting.

It's not urgent, but some kind of a solution would be nice sooner or later. I guess it could be just handled with DMs taking most of the gold and keeping tabs on how much of it is in store, giving it when it's needed. Considering it often takes days to get a DM if you have poor luck, it's not ideal. But it's something, and I'm open to suggestions.

Setting up a donation bowl shouldn't take much time. Although you wouldn't easily be able to get money back out again, the idea is that you'd be contributing to a general fund for the Docks that would be monitored by the Dms and then we'd take that into account.

Barehander

Would DMs be able to reduce gold from the bowl balance when they give it out to PCs? The idea was to grant sponsorship to new PCs who need some money to set up their own business, for example. Something like, you want to set up an alchemy shop but you need the money to buy the recipes and hire some ingredients gatherers before you can start making profit. I reckon it's much more satisfying both IC and OOC than simply pouring gold down a hole and just assuming it has an effect.

But I guess good ideas rarely work out equally well in practice, so it might very well be that no PC is ever in actual need of this fund.

PCs are better off working with other PCs to make some money. That gives them more opportunity to interact for things other than merchant stuff. If you want to start a business, work for it, don't get the gold from some bowl.

Thomas_Not_very_wise

Sanctuary Council had a communal Bank. Put some money in, and you can only take so much money out, unless you put back in that same amount later on...

I believe our banking system can handle mutual/shared accounts easily enough. Setting the Sons up with a shared bank account accessible to all members may be the best solution.

Barehander

That would be pretty awesome. When you know for sure, let us know if something needs to be attempted in game.

I wonder if this is doable in the upcoming bunch of docks updates.
