or you could just call them 'PAWN' or 'KNIGHT' etc. respectively

Elytherin Dragonius

another idea along the lines of just renaming the same pieces is to play Shougi, japanese chess, the rules are very similar and all the pieces in Shougi look the same with different characters on them, thus not spoiling the look by having every piece look the same just with different names

Disco

Do we really need this? We play a game where we should go slay dragons or orcs, not play chess or worse yet, go fishing!

Kotenku

Need it? Well no, of course we don't need it. Whether or not it's necessary however, is not a valid argument against a suggestion. The fact of the matter is that there is no reason not to add this. It's only a matter of a DM finding the time and interest to implement it.

Honestly, I'd be thrilled to have a barebones chess-board in EfU. Sure, there are better things to do when the server's got even 10 people online, but if all you've got are two people during a dead hour, or you want to run a tournament that doesn't necessarily involve fighting, a chessboard with workable pieces could make for a pretty excellent addition to the server.

It's insulting that you'd categorize chess and video game fishing together!

I'm not a fan of chess in NWN since the interface simply looks too clunky and weird. Although, I might begin experimenting with an extremely barebones chess script on my local server, or I might scour NWVault and see what they have to offer.

Disco

Well Sternhund we have NWN fishing, and now we might be getting NWN chess, so comparing them seem natural.

What I am grumpy about is the fact that we play a fantasy game where you should strive to make epic stories or the likes, not play chess or sit at the pond fishing.

Chess could potentially be a wonderful catalyst for amazing roleplay. I could write essays on the massive and amazing history of chess. In summary, chess has been one of the greatest storytellers of human history. Consider the Emporer and the Immigrant:

The Cafe de la Regence in Paris was an internationally renowned hub of chess activity back in the day. The Cafe saw daily visits from an ambitious young lieutenant named Napolean Bonaparte. He was reported to play his openings badly, was impatient if his adversary dwelt too long upon his move, and upon defeat he became sore and irritable. Napolean was never a great chess player, but was passionate about the game his entire life. He brought the game of chess with him everywhere, from battles in Egypt to Russia, and all across Europe. British writers Mike Fox and Richard James once wrote, "Even at the height of his great campaigns, when he was making mincemeat of the best generals in Europe, he took time off to get thrashed by his own generals over the chessboard."

Later, when Napolean was exiled to the tiny island of St. Helena, he continued to play. "The conqueror who had once controlled a large portion of the world was reduced to fighting the rest of his wars on sixty-four squares." An elaborate escape plan had been delivered to Napolean, although it was never quite revealed to him. The plan's instructions were embedded in an ivory chess set which was given to Napolean, but the French officer that was supposed to disclose the hidden plans died on the voyage to St. Helena. Napolean loved this chessboard. He played on it for the rest of his life without knowing that inside it lay the key to his escape.

Consider Benjamin Franklin and the Enlightenment. Franklin was a diplomat working in London and Paris for much of his career as a deputy postmaster general of the colonies. When hostilities in America from the English grew, Franklin had to leave. However, just as he was set to do so, he received an invitation to play a single game with the prominent socialite Lady Howe at her comfortable London home. Despite homesickness and personal danger in England, he could not say no to the game of chess. He was known for loving the game, and played it whenever he could. Franklin advocated that chess improved a person's foresight, circumspection, caution, and perseverance. At Lady Howe's residence, she and Franklin conversed on discussions of mathematics, and then abruptly a switch to politics. Over the chessboard, she was able to convince Franklin to play a part in reconciliation between England and the Colonies. On Franklin's third visit to Lady Howe's residence, he met Lord Howe, Lady Howe's brother who hoped to avert a collision between the crown and the colonies. Under the guise of social chess games, Lord Howe and Franklin embarked on a secret two-month project. Although the chess intrigue worked perfectly, the diplomacy failed miserably.

A year later, after helping to draft the Declaration of Independence, Franklin traveled to Paris to negotiate treaties and secure a critical military alliance. He was delighted by the quality of chess players in Europe and chose to stay in Europe to play, especially to play games in the boudoir of his friend Anne-Louise Boivin d'Hardancourt Brillon de Jouy as she took exceptionally long baths.

What does this mean for EFU? Chess is without a doubt the most powerful game in human history. It allows a cerebral means for individuals to conduct business. Players can choose to resolve conflicts not through a duel, but by their mettle over the microcosm of chess. It can be used as a social tool for individuals to bond and negotiate. The opportunities in roleplay are immense. Epic stories can be created over a chessboard! Thus, the implementation of chess in EFU goes far above and beyond that of "fishing."

FleetingHeart

If this goes in. There will be Fish themed pieces, just to spite Disco.

Porkolt

Don't forget how both Napoleon and Franklin were beaten by the Turk, the famous chess automaton that later turned out to be a hoax controlled by a midget chess master.

Disco

I hate you all ;-)

And Yes Sternhund, Chess is still better than fishing.

You're wanting a mini game in the game, that's cool. But why not gather your brillant minds to invent a specific EfUA mini-game instead of copying a RL game?

Go play chess online. Personnaly i'd prefer have my silly simple questions answered than see DMs spend time on scripting a chessboard, even if it's a great game.

We've already got blackjack/21 in Kingsman. Find something else than chess, please. Next thing we'll have people wanting texas-poker or the like.

We've got a card deck, we've got dice. Lots of games to do with those already. Make PC that introduces mini-games you invent. That'd make way for gambler-type PCs and all that goes with it in terms of interaction.

derfo

i don't really see how having 32 placable heavy chairs named rook, pawn, etc. is going to be catastrophic for those that like the game, as opposed to say, idling outside of the kingsman and spamming quests. it's pretty sad that even a cool easily implemented idea such as this is met with so much hatred

lovethesuit

Want fish also chess

Letsplayforfun

I'll rephrase: a chess game is immersion breaking to me, that's all. You could scribe a Texas-hold-them deck card, it'd make the same feeling, except it'd be small, whereas a huge chess game is noticeable wether you want it or not.
