It would be nice to add a chessboard somewhere in the ziggurat. Nothing too complex, using the palete floor tile that is a chessboard and putting statue placables in it that could be carried and dropeed in the same way the rune stones are in SoU would suffice, no further scripting needed.

I imagine two mortal enemies having a friendly chess game, for example, of two faction leaders deciding their victory/defeat through the chess game.

Or just random people challening others. I'd play.

You could even script the whole thing into a pair of conversation windows, one that talks to each player and communicates the other one's moves on an ASCII grid.

Much easier to make than a chess game with scripts and placeables.

Relinquish

No way to enforce where the players put them down.

Take it
Run Away
Put it down 20 areas away.

Make them weight 300 lbs. People won't. (Well, they will in the begining, and it will get old soon)
Also, i think it would be much more work if done by ASCII than the way i said it, on the other hand, ASCII allows players to do that everywhere. But it is also less flashy.

I've seen characters play chess using the forums (myself included). Personally, I think this is a much easier, quicker, and simple way to play chess "ICly".

Just as well, it allows others to watch!

Sounds like a cool idea, I'm sure they are able to limit tossing chess pieces everywhere somehow, and if not then they can make a rule against it

I like the forum-letters method. It reminds me of Blade Runner. I know I've seen other examples of two people far apart, playing by mail. It's always a set-up for some smart-ass to show up, see the one board, and win in the current scenario, thus proving he's a robot or whatever.

I suppose if you guys played, though, it'd be an actual game, and no robots would interrupt to shame you with their badassitude.

This pretty much is what i want.

There are many ways this can be avoided.

I like this idea... and the chess quandry thoroughly, for certain Red Knight holy days. If the devs are up for it, this sounds great, especially since Walther loves this sort of thing >,>

However, my question would be how much lag this would add, if any. I've seen such implementations before, and there's even dedicated NWN Chess servers, iirc.

For the event I mentioned before, I was srsly just thinking of having the players play in an OOC chess tournament on yahoo or any of the other numerous online chess places, and then having the results reflect the IC results, with prizes and stuff. It certainly isn't as IG, but it would have been easy enough to setup.

Elytherin Dragonius

err.... could there just be a modified version of the puzzle?

pillers form the grid and coloured discs count as the pieces

Halfbrood

I love chess I would love to see this IG, maybe a script could be added to a transition waypoint that destroys pieces carried beyond the door.

Porkolt

A main argument against areas like this on other servers is that they cause ridiculous lag (don't forget you're adding 32 NPCs that all have scripts applied to them in a single area).

Also, I think playing actual chess on a small scale or by mail really has a lot more style than giant Harry Potter-esque chessboards.

Drakill Tannan

Wich is why i proposed placable, not NPCs, that are only scribted to be pickable and droppable.

It would be no different than adding 32 new trees to the island, lag-wise.

Porkolt

There aren't enough placeables that look like chess pieces, though (there are some, but they don't represent all pieces). Unless you want to work with uninteresting surrogate.
