Mighty Crossbows do not make sense.

Special crossbows are always a possibility, however.

It doesn't need to make sense.

In NWN there is one simple explaination for everything.

MAGIC

It looks like somebody didn't read my Star Trek: Voyager-worthy explanation for the existence of Mighty Crossbows.

I think I'll repeat this. Why are DMs claiming this when we *have one in the module?* It drops on the snakes quest. It's called the Reptilian Small Ballista. It has +1 Mighty, -2 Dex.

Also, the only ways to make a crossbow better are:
  • Give it bonus feat: Sneak Attack.
  • Massive Crits
  • Unlimited Ammo with bonus damage.
  • Mighty.
Massive Crits is unreliable and doesn't work on the many crit immune beasties. Unlimited Ammo stops it being able to fire special ammo and seems more high powered and complicated than just "It's a BIG damn crossbow".

Elytherin Dragonius

a simple way to make a mighty crossbow that makes sence without resorting to magic is to add a pully reduction to the winch, (look up how a block and tackle works) and to add even more realism to it, block and tackles were very common on ships from the "Period" in question so it would be a simple enough thing to addapt to a heavy crossbow. -1 DEX +5 STR (or something like that, boosts the damage it pumps out but makes it a little harder to aim)

N/A

QuoteYou're leaving out improved critical. It becomes 17-20/2.

That would only really matter if crossbow crits do not suck so hard.

VanillaPudding

Improved critical requires +8 AB . I really doubt your going to see any pure fighters or any of the other mutliclass options that can even take this feat by level 9 with a focus in crossbows.

I didn't make it. I maintain it doesn't make sense. *shrugs*

What a passionate debate on crossbows!

Drakill Tannan

Nut, nothing in the forghoten realms makes sence, does it really matter that much?

Cricket

Mighty crossbows would have catastrophic implications that I'm not sure any of us nor the DM team wish to deal with. I can't even begin to compile a list of all the catastrophic effects such an addition to the module would cause.

in real life english longbowmen would bring their bows to the bow maker and ask them to make it mighty for x amount of gold coins, but this was out of the question for the crossbowmen.

Drakill Tannan

Actually cricket, they are fine as they are (bows at least) as the counterpart of the melee weapons. In a war a bow wasn't used to kill an entire unit, it was used to weaken them so the swordmen gained an aditional advantage in battle. That is what (in a smaller scale) ranged weapons are used in general in NWN at low levels.

However, when you compare a longbow with a crossbow, the longbow is simply better, since you can get 3 attacks per round using 2 feats, while crossbows can get a maximun of 2 with 3 feats. (In this setting).

Crossbows should be IMO as strong as a longbow.
