Get rid of the spambots

Easiest solution I can think of to stop them from registering, is to change the registration script and how it handles the entered email.


Right now we need to enter our email in the box normally, which the bots can also do very easily. I would suggest changing the way we put an address in, such as having the using omit the .com and having the php script add .com to anything entered or substitute @ for () or something along these lines and have the script swap those characters for an @, and @ for something else.

While instructions on how to properly enter the email would be there for any human registering, bots would have no such luck and would be unable to post, since they will never receive the confirmation email, because the email they entered which would normally be valid, wouldn't work with our new method.

This doesn't work as well as you think it would in practice since most of these are not "fully automated bots" but instead are "human assisted bots."  Human assisted bots can usually read instructions like this and alter their form submission routines to compensate.  Adding specific domain information is usually much MORE helpful (e.g. name one of the major efua factions) since that requires looking outside the form page (which is usually enough of a hassle to deter habs).  However, that's also a pain-in-the-butt for new members who don't know the answer either, and there's also laziness to battle against.  It doesn't seem like bots are enough of an issue to warrent any change right now anyway.
