The Departure

The Awakening of Itl-tua, the Worm Out of The Mist and the corruption of the Isle of Blight.

For three years, Davison Johnson and his men slept deep and dreamt well. With each sweet dawn, they awoke rejuvenated, and with a strength that let them face the challenges of Ymph.

And they would require this strength for what was to come. On a clear night three years after the ascension of Davison Johnson, the earth began to rumble and shake. With this phenomena, the Mist also came and covered the island in entirety. All but Davison Johnson awoke from the sleep. When the men rushed into his tent, he awoke, and spoke to his men.

Y'nithacth has spoken to me again. And this is what he has said.

“He has awoken. Itl-tua, the Worm Out of The Mist.He comes to feed on your dream. And once he has eaten all of your dreams, he will come and eat you. Davison, you must go to the mountains, and slay the Worm Out of The Mists.”

Davison Johnson agreed to slay the worm to protect his people and set out for the mountains with his five most trusted men. Christopher, Alfredo, Gullery, Daniel, and Jack. The Mist in the mountains was thick and it was difficult to see. Suddenly, they heard a voice through the Mist. It was spoken in a language Davison and his men could not comprehend. The source of the voice came closer, and closer, until they saw a shape. It was a giant. An ogre. A mist ogre. Another followed. And another. And another.

The largest of the mist ogres stepped forth and spoke.

Itl-tua, the Worm Out of The Mist will be free from your harassment. We will not let you slay him. We will not let you pass. This is what I declare. Step further, and you will die. Stay on this island, and you will die. The Worm Out Of The Mists will have no opposition. Flee now, and live.

Davison and his men charged. A brutal battle ensued that resulted in the death of Alfredo, Gullery, and Jack. But they were victories, and the deaths were not in vain. Davison, Christopher, and Daniel continued on their search through the Mists in search of the worm. That was until Davison saw a cave. From the cave he heard a voice.

I, Itl’tua, the Worm Out of the Mist await you here in the cave. Y'nithacth has commanded you to slay me, but slay me you cannot. Come, dream for me, and you will be safe. Sleep for me and you will not have to worry.

Davison knew from Y'nithacth that this worm was treacherous and deceitful, so he, Christopher, and Daniel walked into the caves. The worm was enormous. A true colossus. But the might of Y'nithacth flowed in the veins of Davison and his men, so they had nothing to fear. The worm fled through the earth, heavily wounded. In the battle, Daniel lost his life and Christopher was heavily injured. Davison knelt before Christopher and held his hands against Christopher’s chest and prayed.

Y'nithacth, I asked you to grand me the strength to cure my brother. He has fought bravely, and will die unless his wounds are cured.

Davison’s hand glowed blue and the wounds of Christopher were healed.

The two men returned to the camp and that night Y'nithacth spoke to Davison in his sleep.

Itl’tua has fled. He has fled to an isle not far from here. Follow him, Davison. Pick only the best of your men, for this battle is a dangerous one.

Davison picked ten men and travelled to this island. The presence of the Itl’tua corrupted the island. This day, the isle is known as the Blighted Isle. It was the wicked presence of the worm that corrupted the island.

The Slumbrerer of the Mists, He Who Dwells in the Lake

"Y'nithacth, Slumberer of the Mists, I ask that you watch over me, so that my dreams are sweet and my sleep deep"
-An ancient prayer asking Y'nithacth for protection.

Y'nithacth slumbers in the depths of the Lake of Steam. We are beings of dreams, and Y'nithacth watches over us as we sleep and dream. Every man has the duty to see that his dreams are fulfilled. Pray to him, and your rest shall be deep and dark dreams shall not ravage you during the night. Y'nithacth protects us from Itl’tua, the Worm Out of the Mist. He also watches that men are not taken by the Mist.

Itl'tua
The Worm Out of the Mists, the Grand Devourer

"Itl'tua, I ask that you spare me from your great hunger. I swear my eternal service to you in this life and the next."
-An prayer dedicated to Itl'tua.
Itl'tua, the Worm Out of the Mist, slithers through our dreams and devours them at will. He is a wicked being that will devour all men once it has eaten all dreams. Now he lays in wait on the Isle of Blight. It is he whose presence has corrupted the Isle of Blight. The dead rise in his presence and plant-life wilts. In ancient times, Itl'tua was worshipped by the Mist Ogres of Ymph. Legends say that once his hunger is sated, not only the men will be eaten, but Faerun in entirety.

Zu'iggorach
The Dweller Beyond the Mists, The Lurking Terror

"Zu'iggorach. I swear eternal service to you. I submit myself and beg for your mercy."
-An ancient prayer dedicated to Zu'iggorach.

Zu’iggorach is an ancient being, as ancient as Faerun itself. It sleeps, hidden in the Shrouded Isles. It is believed that Zu’iggorach has conjured the Mist that covers the Archipelago, and that once the Mist has distorted the minds of men, Zu’iggorach will awaken to devour all that lives. Even in his sleep, his might can be felt in nightmares. It is possible that H’bala and Zu’iggorach are the same being, or that H’bala is an aspect of the Lurking Terror. Regardless, Zu’iggorach lies in wait until the Mist will let it rise again.

The Ascencion

Thousands of years ago, a group of settlers arrived on the island Ymph. Led by Davison Johnson, these settlers set camp by the Lake of Steam. Even then, the Mist covered the island of Ymph and it was this Mist that brought dreams to the settlers. Davison Johnson was the first of the settlers to hear the voice of Y'nithacth in his sleep. And this is what the voice has told him.

"I am Y'nithacth, the Slumberer Of The Mists. Born from the dreams of men long gone, I now lay at the bottom of the Lake of Steam. Sleep, and dream. Then, when the sun rises, you and your men kneel before the Lake of Steam and speak,” Y'nithacth, Slumberer of the Mists, I ask that you watch over me, so that my dreams are sweet and my sleep deep.”

When the sun rose, Davison gathered his men, and they spoke as asked by Y'nithacth. Suddenly, mist covered Davison, and he began to levitate. Slowly, he moved towards the Lake of Steam. Still covered by the mist, he was slowly lowered into the Lake of Steam. The settlers were dumbfounded, and knew not what to do with the loss of their leader.

For three days the men bickered on a new course of action, until on the third of Mirtul, Davison emerged from the waters of the Lake of Steam, once again covered by the Mist. He walked before the men and spoke.

"I have seen Y'nithacth in the Lake. And I return now, with his power flowing in my veins. I come to you now as a priest of Y'nithacth, to spread his sacred word, to sweeten your dreams, and to unite you with Y'nithacth as I have been."

The Second Battle Against Itl’tua

Davison, Daniel, Christopher, and eight men sailed for the Blighted Isle. As Davison stepped foot on the island, he felt the corruption Itl’tua sowed. His men also felt the corruption, and several of them could not bear it. These few who could not stand the corruption collapsed and did not stand again. Their eyes rolled in the back of their heads and they twitched and shook wildly before their breathing ceased.

Davison stood before his men and roared.

"Itl’tua. You should not defeat us, for we stand united. Y'nithacth watches, and your wretchedness shall not win over us."

And they continued on their search for Itl’tua. After a while of wandering, Davison collapsed. He covered his ears and shouted “Out of my mind, out of my mind.”

But the voice could not be stopped. And this is what the voice said.

"I am the Worm Out of the Mist. You stand and defy a power beyond your understanding. Now is your last choice. Join me. Else you shall not leave this Isle. You men believe that death is a horrid fate, but what I can to you overshadows even a death in the flames."

Yet, Davison stood strong. He could not be corrupted, even in the face of death. Quickly he retold the words to his men. They did not accept the words of the Worm so nonchalantly. All but Daniel and Christopher, who fought the worm before, shivered in fear. But they continued.

The search took almost an hour, but they found Itl’tua waiting.

"You have come to fight me. You fools."

Davison and his men charged. But they were easily swiped away by the worm. Davison raised his blade and roared.

"Y'nithacth, grant us the strength to win this battle. We stand before a mighty fiend, and I fear that alone we cannot win this battle."

A blue light surrounded Davison, and he felt rejuvenated. He felt a strength he has never felt before. Once again he charged the worm. This time, his men did not follow. They soon realized there was no need. With a single blow, Davison cut Itl’tua. Roaring in pain, the worm send its gigantic maw towards Davison, but quickly he leaped to the side.

Itl’tua roared loudly and ghouls burst forth from the ground. Nine of the ten men drew their blades and engaged the ghouls. The tenth, Daniel charged towards the worm. But instead of lunging his blade at Itl’tua, he lunged it at Davison, connecting with his side. Before he swung his blade, Daniel spoke.
"I will not die to this beast. I will not suffer whatever fate it has planned for us. I will murder you, Davison. Then I will live."
Davison glared at Daniel and a battle between the two ensued. Parry followed parry. Cut followed cut. Two friends now stood before the worm, fighting. Itl’tua did not interrupt the battle between the two but instead stood, watching. As the battle between the two dragged on, Davison won the upper hand and swiped through Daniel’s sword hand. Daniel turned and ran towards the worm.

"Itl’tua, please, I beg, protect me. And I will fight for you."

Davison shot a glance at the men fighting the ghouls. He winced when he saw that all but Christopher still stood. The ghouls, too, fell.

The worm spoke. Itl’tua’s very voice made the earth shake.

"You have fought for me, but were defeated. But I will forgive you. You, Daniel, shall serve me. Serve me until the end of time. Lay your remaining hand on me."

And so Daniel did. He was but a speck in comparison to this colossal worm. Suddenly, Daniel’s skin began to melt. The melted skin dripped onto the ground and poured into the Worm.

"Davison. I will return. This I swear."

A bright light blinded Davison and Christopher. When they opened their eyes, Itl’tua was gone. Again the earth shook and the voice could be heard.

  "I will return, Davison."

Davison and Christopher decided not to pursue the worm. They returned to the camp. Again they failed to defeat the worm.

That night, Y'nithacth spoke to Davison.

"Davison. Worry not for Itl’tua. There is a greater threat. Zu’iggorach. Zu’iggorach, the Lurking Terror."

Zu’iggorath the Lurking Terror

An ancient evil lurks amongst the Shrouded Isles. The Lurking Terror waits patiently.Once it has taken action, an unspeakable terror shall spread, not only through the Shrouded Isles, but Faerun. All that man knows will be undone. We must pray, and pray, plead that the Dweller Beyond the Mists does not awaken.

Thousands of years ago, a wretched creature was born. None know how it came to be, and none had the courage to pursue the history of its origin. For it was feared, and none wished to stare this fear into the eye for simple knowledge. Itl’tua, the Worm Out of the Mist, ate its way out of Zu’iggorath’s womb to sow a terror different from Zu’iggorath, but a dangerous one nonetheless.

The exact nature of the Lurking Terror is shrouded in mystery. Some believe that Zu’iggorath and H’bala are the same. While others believe that H’bala is an aspect of Zu’iggoroth. The exact nature between their relationship, or even if there is one remains unknown to this day. Others say that Zu’iggorath is the abandoned spawn of a deity that has gained might enough to ascend to become a deity itself. As said before, the Lurking Terror’s origin is shrouded in mystery.

Despite the Lurking Terror’s might, he is trapped in Faerun

Zu’iggorath has conjured the Mist that covers the Shrouded Isles. How it has accomplished the feat is known by none, and is irrelevant because the Mist cannot be fought; only held at bay by a strong mind and prayer to Y'nithacth. Y'nithacth purifies the Mist, and allows it to go through our minds and bodies in peace.

Zu’iggorath waits unwearyingly. Once the Mist has warped the mind of men, the Lurking Terror will reveal itself. Man can protect himself from the Mist by offering prayer to Y'nithacth. Before you sleep at night, simply pray to Y’nithacth, and your dreams shall be secure from the Lurking Terro.

Y'nithacth, Slumberer of the Mists, I ask that you watch over me, so that my dreams are sweet and my sleep deep

But that alone will not be enough. None are certain what exactly to do to prevent Zu’iggorath from rising. Perhaps it is a task wholly inevitable, but the clergy of Y'nithacth has not lost hope in the matter. Unfortunately, over the centuries, the clergy of Y'nithacth has been reduced to less than two hundred members that are now spread throughout the Shrouded Isles and Faerun and a united effort is out of question.

It is certain that if Zu’iggorath rises, all that we know will be undone.
