The quest refered to is in the wooded ruin. There is indeed the chance of a save vs death.

You all have my permission to "metagame" avoiding if you want, your own loss if you do!

A highly rewarding, very short and easy quest with very favorable level/party size limitations needs a wrinkle to balance out. And in this case the wrinkle requires no metagaming, perhaps just a bit of IC cleverness and tactics to deal with it.

And since Howland mentioned the quest location (spoilerish), I'll elaborate slightly that what we took as the "clue" (the body in front of the mirror) was interpreted by all the players involved as avoid the mirrors - not that a bodak was waiting for us.

Bodaks can be easily dealt with, as its been mentioned. You just have to IC smart about how you go about them.

You guys make things too complicated. Make the corpse a placeble with inventory and add inside him a note that says something like "Oh no, the black zombies are terrible! when lenny gazed into their eyes he died just like that!"

Problem solved.

And then it would be metagaming to "find out" about the death effect, since most pcs won't have a high enough lore skill to know what a bodak is and does, even less to know what their tooths look like...

Its OBVIOUS once inside the QA that whatever it is can kill with a glance if one were to pay attention. Might as well just put a big sign saying "COME SEE THE BODAK" as do that <_<
