A call for Harcore RP!

Hello EFU:A fans.  I've had alot of fun playing on EFU/EFU:A for the last year or so.  I know there are many excellent roleplayers on the server.  I'd like to count myself among them, however, too often I find myself caught up in the mechanics of questing and just trying to keep my characters alive.  This Call goes out to any and all that want to try and do some very RP intensive, time-consuming roleplaying, complete with "[grips his sword tightly, awaiting the next wave of undead]" (etc) and skill checks where ever they are applicable (including playing out the results of a bad roll).  This will not be a loot/ lets-do 4-quests-in-2-hours experiance, just getting some quests done with the reward of great RP.

To start I'd like to just do some scripted quests in a very RP intensive fasion with ALL players involved focusing on RP and how their characters would react in situations that are found on the quests.  Their reactions should be based on the characters stats and history.  I'm sure this happens all the time in places on EFU:A, I'd just like to be a part of some nice intense RP.  I have no specific ideas in mind as to how to get this together IG, but for right now, I'd just like to judge player interest and find those who find the idea appealing.  Thanks to all! -Zym :D

I hate hardcore RP when there is nothing to do. But as long as we're questing i love it. Count Richard Wayne for any quests of this sort.

I'm seeking immersion IG or the closest I can get to the feel of a pencil-and-paper game.  If I get a few more replies, I think this will be great! :-D

The Beggar

Personally I feel that this game is better than PnP, due to the fact that the computer takes out all the banal dice rolling, rules look ups, DM whining moments that usually take up the majority of a PnP experience.

Allowing anyone playing, to actually play the character. That's why I don't play PnP anymore. And the fact I can play anytime I have time. Again, not possible with PnP.

Garem

You might try simply getting a regular group together and making this request of them prior to questing via a brief OOC party message. I don't think many people will turn you down for asking them to put a little extra effort into quest RP, barring those who have time constraints or such issues.

Luke Danger

Agreed with Garem.

If you have some players you play regularly with, you really can RP as time goes on.

Just find some people you really like, and as you play through, throw RP in, you'd be suprised what you get.

Beggar, I wholly agree with you!  Everything you mentioned in your post are things that I really enjoy about NWN, especially the ability to see the dice rolls done for you.  After 15 years of running pencil and paper games, I finally let loose and picked up NWN to play on EFU, and I love it.  From what I've seen NWN really streamlines the RPG experience, I don't know what the DM side is like, but it seems like MORE work than PnP.  I wasn't advocating making a ton of pointless rolls in my post either, just few, here and there in an appropriate situation. eg:

Player1 "We should go to the right, seems safer."

Player2 "There is no glory in being a coward, I think left!"

In such a situation I'd like to see a CHA or INT roll made by both players, with the better roll (INT vs. CHA?) deciding the direction of travel.

Where there is no disagreement, no rolls are needed.  Perhaps one or two of the players will still disregard the information, but it would give players 3,4,5 etc an idea of who had the more intelligent/moving statement.

So what do you say Beggar? Are you in? :)

Vlaid

I will never ever ask a player to roll an opposed CHA to see who I believe more.

Opposed social rolls have no place in PC to PC interaction. I don't mind the occasional social skill roll just to "show what your skill is" so I get an impression of how convincing they might sound....but in the end, I'm going with the guy that has portrayed his point better.

"Hey guys, let's go this way!" [Points] /c roll persuade check 1d20+39=59 isn't going to make me necessarily go that way, because he did a horrible job of using his persuade skill ICly.

Hardcore RP requires little rolling at all (in my opinion), and in fact if you want "hardcore RP", the constant rolling of stats/skill checks is more immersion breaking.

Kotenku

I thought this was going to be a call for one of those sexy vampire covens complete with explicit S&M.

I found myself completely disappointed.

(Zymnarkmar, you should join a DM faction. Any one of them will do; it is hands down the BEST way to get into awesome roleplay situations)

Blubie

Or find a budding player faction, and try to join that, if you don't like applications.

I don't mean like banners and shit, I mean people going out and doing stuff as a group, and working towards similar goals.

Nuclear Catastrophe

I actually approve of this.

Seeing people putting a lot more thought and description into their characters dialogue and mannerisms is always a good thing.

The skill rolls - not a big fan of, but if you work something out together, why not.

Go for it.

Zymnarkmar

Thanks Nuke!

It's good to hear some DM support!  I'm sorta old-school, so ok, maybe ditch the rolls, but I wish stats were better reflected IG (besides the ability to bash or stealth, etc.) and that was the only way I could think to implement it.

As for the other replies, thanks for the suggestions I'll have to try that when I retire my current characters.

Vlaid, I agree the dice rolling does break immersion, however people with insane skills (Persuade, Intimidate, etc) should get rewarded for fleshing out their characters in that way, and one's character should respond accordingly, IMHO.  That's why some play RPGs, for the higher CHA or INT or STR (many ;) ) than IRL. It let's people portray someone they are not.

But the Call still goes out to any who wish some Hardcore RP! Reply or PM if you wish!  Thanks! -Zym

IxTheSpeedy

My 2 cents.  I can't agree more with increased RP.  Always a fan as far as the immersion but dice rolls I actually find have the opposite affect.  I prefer to use dialogue to resolve stuff punctuated by the occasional "/c roll intimidate check" or the like just to get around the engine limitations.

Cruzel

Easiest way to get into some hardcore, DM supervised RP:

Quote from: "Some Guy"Randomplayer[DM Channel]: DM NEEDED FOR PVP QUICK!

DM[Tell];  Okay, go ahead.

Randomplayer[DM Channel]; False alarm! But while you're Here.... Watch me do this-

On a more serious note, anyone interesting in some non-powerquesting sweetness should send me a PM, and I'll give you some details when I am back home and able to play.

TheImpossibleDream

You know some people used to run separate campaigns with a few players of their choosing for stuff like this, worth considering.
