I'm not sure how encouraging typing "*put knife on throat*" to kill people is a solution to that or allowing people to kill others by going "*slices bob's throat*".

It isn't fun at all. It bypasses all the dodge, natural armor (the person's skin being too hard to be scratched), deflect armor (Your blade simply sliding on the throat guard) and other saves that a person might have.

It's silly to do without a DM and 'could' possibly be done with a DM to roll all the proper checks... and has been done in the past in very specific instances (mostly with NPCS as victims or antagonists).

Emote wars with PCs is just a very bad idea, trust me. I realize you don't understand yet but the engine is actually quite balanced for all classes despite what you may think and the engine should be used in PvP situations of this kind. Hostage situations are great RP and very easily done (and have been done countless times) either by subdualing someone or some other RP form, but definitely not emote-kills.

Here's an example of why it shouldn't be done:

When you get hit by a fireball do you stop in combat, and RP rolling on the ground in agony from the burns? Some people do for flavor, but I certainly wouldn't expect every PC to do this everytime they are hit with a fireball/combust, even though the RP makes sense.

It does grant an unfair advantage. Should anyone with a high stealth skill and a knife be able to do this? What skill is it based off of? What checks should be made? Do you need to hit their AC to represent wriggling free and the armor protecting their neck?

Some people might be willing to play along, but I wouldn't be-grudge anyone for not. If you want to hold them hostage, subdue them, and hold a knife to their throat. In terms of the engine, and the game... you have "defeated" them, and have earned the right to insta-kill them from that point, if you choose to.

Just my opinion.

Personally, i don't agree with mort, and i can only "trust" Howland, but Jade makes a good point.
