Abstract:

Hailing from the rugged and unforgiving land of Damara, the Arcane Vigil is a dualistic religious order sworn to two Gods, the Sentinel and the Seeker - devoted to maintaining a strict, pious and orthodox use of magic. They deem practitioners of arcane to be fiendish, depraved and the source of innumerable evils blighting the modern world - all originating from the hubris of the Netherese Empire.

They have arrived in the Underdark in pursuit of a malevolent Elven bloodseer, a magician who violently escaped from their frost-bitten holdfast in the cold north. Though at first they seek solely to recapture their lost charge, the Vigil soon comes to realise the gravity of their discoveries deep beneath the earth - a fulfillment of an ancient prophecy in their esoteric annals which challenges the very foundations of their existence...

Characters:

Excluding specific circumstances, a character made for joining The Arcane Vigil should be from Damara, a cruel hinterland in the cold north of Faerun that has suffered the yoke of countless tyrants and bloodthirsty petty kings. Most Damarans make use of a Germanic or Slavic naming scheme.

Vigilants are usually extremely pious individuals, devoted to their faith to the point of zealotry - Damara offers scant other solace than the warmth of a deific code. They are typically Fighters or Clerics sworn to Helm, the Sentinel. Their usual function sees them serving as wardens, keeping volatile or uncooperative magi suppressed deep within their fortress prison. However, Vigilants also strike out in force to recapture escaping magi or to investigate rumours of dissident sorcerers in the Damaran hinterlands.

Your Vigilant, assigned to the chapter of Master Ulrich Dannenberg, has been in pursuit of one such escaped mage for several months. The chase across the sunless horrorscape of Faerun has led your group to a gleaming white portal promising salvation - a portal into which the notorious Bloodseer has escaped. What awaits has yet to be seen...

Wielders of the arcane among the Vigil are known as Thaumaturges. Suffering years of unforgiving indoctrination, some magicians may choose to submit to their torment and embrace servitude to the Sentinel and Seeker. Believing their arcane power to be the essence of their spiritual overlords, Thaumaturges join the Vigilants in seeking to spread the Seeker's enlightenment to their ignorant or dissident counterparts. Typically sworn to Savras, these order-loyal magi are deemed holy creatures and the epitome of man's ability to redeem himself despite his base and evil inner nature.

Sorcerers, Wizards and Bards are all suitable Thaumaturge classes. A Zealous Faith perk Sorcerer would be a highly appropriate class for such a role.
