What I miss most about the Council : Dr Dragon as a Councillor

I guess I'm just a political junkie. I love elections, listening to speeches, etc. In fact, for me that's the best part, because once people get into office, all too often they let you down.

I thought the Council was a flavourful addition to the Sanctuary setting, but am not upset at all that it has passed. To be honest, democracy is not a common (or even normal) government type in most fantasy settings, so it was nice while it lasted.  :)

An obsession with political speeches?  You?  I could not tell based on your signature.

Though I agree, I liked some of the speeches too.

Oh Lord... my first ever character on EfU was Merin B'tziel the Madaxe Hin, wannabe serial killer. He runs directly into the the Scholar and tries to join him... best first two hours I've ever played.

I remember THE MADAXE.

In topicly, I would just like to state that while the Council provided a hotspot of activity, intrigue and plotting every election or so, it wasn't as great (in my opinion) as fostering productive conflict. I feel like the major way to deal with Councilors was to kill them if they were getting in your way.

The Guild system puts real power behind PCs, making them more than just 'that guy who got elected'. PCs must have a degree of influence among other PCs to be able to run a Guild, and thus (in my understanding) enjoy a degree of influence similar to that which a Councilor may have in Sanctuary. I doubt we will see many Guild leaders being assassinated, for fear of retribution. Or, if we do see many of them killed by their enemies, I bet it will be different from what we usually saw with Council assassinations, where someone would just disappear and never be heard from again and no one would care enormously.

Finally, I'd point out that the Guild system is a great step towards maintaining the balance of DM/PC faction longevity in the server. I can see all the current Guilds becoming longstanding PC factions in their own right, something I do not believe was possible in EfU without a lack of DM support - basically to handle all the questions that have been scripted into the Guild system. Associating PC factions (Guilds) and organizations to the sort of influence we had in the Council (which I see Patricians - and especially Court Members already achieving) is a great idea. It helps give the PC faction authority and respectability comparable to what DM factions may get, and it gives the leader an actual banner to have his followers rally around, something Councilors rarely had after their campaigns for very long.
