There are a lot of things in EfU:A that cause fear. Enemy mages, creatures with auras of it such as mummies and dragons (dear God in Heaven I hope there aren't dragons on this server...) and those stinking troglodytes.

My question is, how is this roleplayed? Is the aura around those more severe monsters magical, or does it just represent the fact that they are terrifying creatures, requiring some steely willpower to attack? What of the spells that cause this? How does the body of an adventurer react to failing to shrug off the effects of Fear?

Because I'm never sure how long the fear effect will last, I don't like to type a full reaction.  Usually just a quick shriek or ZOMG!
Some people seem to be able to handle complex emotes in the heat of combat, but not I.

I can has fun?

Haha. That gave me a good chuckle. :-D

As for the roleplaying of magical fear. I would personally have my character shiver uncontrollably, panicking, sweating, and many other things of that sort. For magical induced fear affects (which is normally necromantic magic), I could picture the character's feelings of agitation and anxiety being forcefully stimulated to unimagiable levels. Leaving them in an unnatural state of panic, feeling that there is a threat to their lives all around them.

In the case of creatures with a fear aura, I could see that being a somewhat supernatural affect they have upon your mind. Their presense or magnificence being so disturbing, that you cower before them. What ever it is about these creatures, their presence triggers a sense of fear and panick that is unlike anything ever felt in the natural world.

Of course, you can take my words lightly, since this is just a speculation as to how and why characters cowers due to the affects of magic, or the presence of creatures. Feel free to Roleplay the affects of fear anyway you want.  :)

People roleplaying actual fear in scary situations would be even more impressive.

Lex has it on the money for the most part. He is right about fear-causing spells that in NWN they are necromantic, and not illusionary or mental, so the fear effect is probably physical.

Monster fear auras are tricky. Most, like a mummy's Despair ability, are supernatural/magical effects and should be treated as such. Note that this causes you to generally become useless and not necessarily see something that your character would find frightening (like "There's no more ale"). Though humorous at times, it's kinda ridiculous.

Other monster's fear auras, notably Dragon's, are extraordinary abilities. These simply cause you to be frightened -of- whatever is causing the effect, and to fear for your life. "There's no more ale" responses in these cases would be even more absurd. "Oh shit ogres" would be more appropriate, where ogres = dragons.

PS - echoing Krunto's sentiment.

Amen. Don't wait for a failed DC to act skurred.

One of my character's prime motivations is fear. Who wouldn't be afraid if they were ripped away from their regular life to an unknown, dangerous island at a COMPLETELY random moment, for no apparent reason whatsoever.
