Magic Weapon Oil

So in PnP, when you're low level you can purchase Magic Weapon Oil which is in all respects a potion of said spell used on the mundane weapon in question.  I was thinking if this was possible to implement, and I could foresee no difficulties in making an item with the Magic Weapon, Single Use property.  The real issue was whether or not one could design this to work with the Brew Potion feat.

One of my biggest gripes in EfU when playing a character without spells was not having a way to effectively damage enemies with DR.  Considering plenty of creatures with DR exist even in the new setting, I'd say the feature would definately see use.

The only argument I could foreseeably understand is that it devalues whatever randomly dropped magic weapon items there are (items that will still be gathered and used even with this feature) and it makes some characters a bit less dependant on support roles (and they might be, but at considerable cost even if its a comparitively low cost potion).  Even with those arguments considered, I'd still say the server ultimately benefits from such an addition.

I've been given Magic Weapon Oil in EFU.  Couldn't make it as a potion though.

Makes you value casters more, don't it?

Hell. No.
MW/Darkfire/flame weapon are the only common low-level buffs you can't get a potion of. This would be one more step to mages becoming glorified vending machines. If you can't get a caster, don't face DR foes. You wouldn't do a quest with no melee capacity, would you? MW trinkets aren't super rare, but uncommon enough they are things you reserve for server invasions, Scary Wilderness Stuff or PVP.

So far as DR foes go, Undead and Shapechangers both have a few weapons each that beat it. Now, I'll argue that weapons similar to those should drop on more quests, as specific weapons are a weight cost. Basic weapons for any weapon-reliant class. Daggers, maces, staffs, bolts and shortbows IMO. Weapons that are on the low end of any weapon proficiency's power scale, but work for any build as a sidearm. They'd mean you would have a chance against DR foes, but you'd have greatly reduced firepower running a +1 vs Undead Staff than a MWed greatsword.

Yep, quit bypassing the rare utility casters still have. There's already plenty of items with MW ability.

I certainly wouldn't want for this to be implemented. When my already Uber characters are slightly crippled, I consider it a good thing!

Jeeze, way to suggest making casters even more useless than they are, huh? >_>

All the consumables, trinkets, so on.. Eventually, no one will make a mage/cleric, instead making super build warriors who farm consumables constantly. >_<

So, no thank you! :D

Er... you mean what basically was going on for the past month or so, when you were practically the only Wizard on the server? TBH though, we need a lot more Wizard/Sorc only consumables with artificially high UMD scores to give these classes something a bard or rogue multi can't use.

Semli

I didn't honestly want the addition to extend to other weapon buffs that are pretty powerful, but I can understand that concern.  What I really wanted was to give characters the capability to make some preperation for foes they couldn't otherwise harm.  You could even go as far as to buy a magic weapon wand to cover this issue, the only problem with this being that you need some type of arcane/divine wand proficiency to use it (or UMD, but you're not going to get a respectable score without point banking or a full rogue build though).

The only people you're creating demand for spellcasters from by talking down this suggestion are the few barbarian and fighter characters that actually didn't choose an out of place level for wand proficiency, either out of ignorance or a desire not to make a 'poorly justified build.'

There are plenty of no-restriction Magic Weapon items available, it's just that they aren't so common as be farmable and replace casters. They serve a valuable role as being items for those times you go, "oh shit, I need to hurt this thing, right now!" And that's fair enough.

PanamaLane

I agree with Scotty. I think there should possibly be a few more consumable items though. Seemed like there were more in the Underdark, and with the large undead presence in the "A", some additions would be useful.
