Two letters to Legates Argyris and Yildirim, written with a strained hand

Honorable Legate,

I invited the M to our home. I shan't name them, due to not being certain if such is to do the same as to name the Sabotage or the Wyrm. They did not reveal their name before it was too late, and neither Legate nor a member of their cabinet was available. I had to make a snap decision, as I did not wish the Well to offend yet another people of the Great Ash. I understand that this is not an excuse, however.

The locals see them as an ill omen, and the invitation as a grave mistake. A mistake, and naught else. Supposedly, where they walk, foul luck follows, and all manner of disasters occur. I do not know if this is mere superstition, or the truth. In effect, it matters very little, as their mere presence is enough to befoul the morale of our people.

I do not know if they are of the Latent. They do hide their faces like them, yet do not bear the same giant stature. Question Jamileh or Zol Nur, or any other accomplished historian, regarding them. What they wish of us is simple: to record the events at Bet Nappahi. I am told that their presence would ensure our loss, or make our victory far more painfully achieved.

I bear full responsibility for the decision. If you wish to fire me, or judge me before the Martyrs in the Hall of Jurisprudence, I shall face the consequences of my mistake without objection.

You will keep your appointment.  Ignorance is forgivable, but inaction is not.  We will watch these wanderers and we will fill in all the gaps that superstition and terror have voided for us.  We will not be undone by soothsayers from the far reaches of the disc.
