Scribes,

While I know this is odd, writing to you such a formal letter, when all I need to do is cross the corridor and meet with you, I may not always be available, and maybe at times a letter may reach me more easily.

As I have written to the rest of the Accord, I would wish to hear if you have plans of your own, to improve the State of the Well, the efficiency of our bureaucracy, to resolve any issues. We are often self-contained in our duties, and usually the Scribes had not needed special or additional funding or help in the past, but if you do have any plans or ideas for such, I would wish to hear what they may be.

Legate Marcellus Saenus

Fabulous Secret Powers

Honorable Legate Marcellus Saenus,

here are some relevant suggestions that sprung to my mind.

  • A requirement that any person pursuing the position of Magistrate is actually familiar with the laws of the well. This has to be tested on some level. Either through experience, or some form of exam, as we discussed. It should also be ensured that someone like Qari can't simply appoint whomever gives him the highest bribe.
  • Future Magistrates should be advised to contact Scribes through missive, or at the Palatial Pyramid, rather than accosting us on the street while we are on our lunch break.
  • Bar members of the Accord from being Magistrates due to a rather obvious bias.
  • Close the Prelate loophole immediately.
  • The coffee in our office should be cheaper. A new supplier, perhaps.
  • Scribes should get employee discounts at The Ambassador's Rest.
  • Any possible pre-emptive measures to protect the Palatial Pyramid from further tremors and quakes should be taken. Perhaps some padding or cushioning could be added to the Chamber of Rule's flooring?
  • The current situation with our wages is abysmal. Why do we have to plead for a share of the Allotment now? What was wrong with the previous system?

Legate

It is the nature of the Scribes that our work is not Glamarous, not often obvious. If all is done right and properly, most would simply not be aware of the vast majority of our actions.

You note yourself the Scribes have not required additional funding in the past, but in times past our wages were drawn directly from the treasury. In efforts toward better book-keeping we now hold our funds set aside as do the many members of the Accord. This however has led to the instances you've been made aware of, one of which is ongoing, in which the Scribes have fallen without payment.

Unlike the rest of the Accord, we work for you directly. Each scribe from the highest offices of the Pyramid, to the Office of Minor Nuisances. We facilitate your will upon the well. As such, putting us in a bidding war of potential benefit to the Well against the Accord seems a self destructive venture.

That said, it is my hope that in time we may see the treasury and state of the well Flourish under our guiding hands. We have already discussed the possibility of raising up an Advocate's License with the Scibes administers testing of aptitude for such a role. Scribe Bashir is being encouraged to move forward with efforts to Produce a far more fact oriented source of news and information for the Pyramid, and my own efforts with the Sublime Bank shall I hope bare more fruit with stimulating the property market.

Aside from this, there is little more I can add that Bashir has not in his own letter.
