Preliminary thoughts on EE.

So I've been messing around with EE in the wind up to the transfer of the server and I've some thoughts and concerns and I wonder if anyone else have any.

So first I would like to say how pretty the ui and crisp the models look. Its not necessarily night and day, but its noticeable and well worth the switch just for that I think if not the bug fixes.

I have noticed that the multiplayer doesn't have set ids, just display mans so I'm not sure how we are going to manage a character transfer.

I tried joining in on a multiplayer server to see how it worked and noticed it needed CEP260.tlk so I went through and copied over my haks, tlk, and override. Game started fine, but when I tried to join the server, the game would crash. I'm doing a clean install atm and will work through what is causing the problem, but we might want to work up a guide for the transfer.

Also I've noticed that they changed the name of the file folders for some reason, abbreviating them, so that might cause a problem for creating an override folder for example.

Those are just my preliminary thoughts and concerns so far. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

Hi,

1. Glad you found the UI nice.

2. Not sure what you meant about the IDs, can you explain?

3. You crashed because you didn't have the needed custom content, I think. A bit unfortunate it doesn't display such a message. In EE the custom content (overrides, tlk, haks, etc.) go into Documents/Neverwinter Nights folder, not into the installation folder. It's best not to add stuff to the installation folder.

Don't worry about a guide, it's being worked on and I'm sure we'll have it ready by Friday/Saturday.

1,3, Glad to hear. I'll look at that when I get home.

2.) As for Ids. There does not seem to be a set account, save perhaps your steam account. Instead when you log in to a server, it asks you for a display name which you can save. This obviously will have nothing to do with Gamespy ids or even be linked to nwn CD keys and the like.

Halfbrood

Your ID is based on your public CD Key - this will increase security from our point of view and be much easier to manage.

From a player's point of view (and DMs as well I guess), if you want to play under a secret/assumed name you are able to do so (at least from other players) by amending the Player Name field in the nwnplayer.ini file in your Documents/Neverwinter Nights folder.

But our CD keys from one game to the next are different I imagine. Will we need to tell a DM our CD keys in the old and new installations so they can be transferred manually (which sounds time consuming for DM's), or is there a system in place to do this already?

Hollow_Mage

If older CD Keys work on Enhanced Edition I would be pleasantly shocked. I am 90% sure this is a re-release with just enough changed that they can charge you again.

Mind you, for a game as old as this, it's still a good investment. I am sure that's why Beamdog exists in the first place: why design an entirely new game when so many people want to play the older ones?

Not a complaint. A complaint would be when Dark Souls II did this with "scholar of the first sin" re-release, after I already bought the game for PS4 and PC. -that- was a money grab.

Edit: on second reading, Misterlich raises a good point about individual transfers.

If my GSID is: Hollow
and my Steam name is: Mage
what if anything do I need to do to get Hollow's PCs on Mage's login for the new server?

Older CD keys won't 'work' as in using them for the new game without purchasing a new one, but we have a record of them and they will be used to transfer server vault characters. I believe there's an automated process for this - however, I defer to Tala as to whether we're employing that or doing a more manual approach to take the opportunity to remove some legacy PCs / old characters from the new server (and perhaps store them elsewhere...)

Tala

There's a "semi-automated" (emphasis on the SEMI) way of moving 1.69 vault to the EE server, but the magnitude amount of the accounts make it almost impossible to use. Unless another DM has plans I'm not aware of to actually do it, the best action IMO would be to move over only the current active PCs.

Will open a thread to manage it..
