Catapults - Multiple hits at once?

So while we were doing the undead gnome quest I was down on the ground with a few others doing some stabbing, and someone launched a catapult at me.

Normally it isn't a big deal, the most I've seen at once is 34 damage, but this time I was hit by three catapult shots at once.



I guess a fighter or barbarian would be able to live, but unfortunately I was taken down to -32 for an instant death. :(

Did the catapult function as intended by doing that, or is it functioning as intended?

No idea about the circumstances on the shooter's end.

I can confirm this happening on another occasion, although I didn't have the presence of mind to screenshot it.
