The default Good Old Games CD Key of Q7RREKF3 is generic and has been banned for security reasons.

QuoteWhen you buy NWN from GOG they give you a generic key that everyone else also gets. If you want a key you can use online without a problem you need to request one.

The support page to do this at is: http://www.gog.com/support/contact/technical_issues_with_games/neverwinter_nights_diamond_edition You must be logged in!

In the "Problem Type" drop down menu choose "multiplayer key request", put the same subject and a tactful message. Click Send at the bottom of the page. A key should arrive by e-mail within a few days. Ta-da.

I wonder how many people will fail to notice that 'add a tactful message' instruction.

This should be made a sticky

Honestly, the fact the default key every single new player will have these days has been banned and a link to this thread need to be on the front page under "Server Information". Before I figured out the forum I spent quite a bit assuming that my installation was broken. "Could not connect to master server" then "CD Key banned". I reinstalled at least 3 times.

I stuck with it because I had heard so much good about the server- but many players wouldnt I think.

Pretty sure it's because of how since the central auth servers are offline, if you've got the same CD Keys as someone else, you can actually log in as their PCs by using their login name.

So that's why the one CD Key that lots of people are guaranteed to have is banned.

Paha

The default cd-key is banned because it's default given by GOG automated mail. It is not unique to anyone.

If anyone bothers to search a bit, it should not be difficult to find. There's several posts and instructions about on website and forum "Information for new players".

In the end, we can do only so much, until people to have to put a bit effort into figuring out errors and problems.

Howlando

There is a prominent thread called "Connecting to EFU" that mentions the importance of requesting a custom GOG key right after the server address. I don't know where else we should put this information.

Condescending Dogma

The only suggestion I could make it what I've seen on a few other places - players who log in with this key are teleported to an isolated area where they are informed of the problem in-game.  Since there would also be a problem with vault overlap, you could always then flag the character .bic for deletion after a forced conversation or something.

The chances of anyone coming across this server without having read the website are fairly slim I would think though, and I imagine the work would be for naught.

Edit:

Below is a link to something FunkySwerve on the Bioware NWN forums put together to give you an idea of how it can be handled:

We do not want to let them to a point where they get ingame with the key. There's reasons for it. This is most secure mean, to completely ban that key.

I mean, in the end, this is very easy to sort out. If any player comes to irc and just asks, it's solved very easily. At any given time, someone in irc is able to easily advice this. Or if they check the forum or website, they should be able to figure it out quite easily.
