NWN booting problems

I know other people have had the same problem as I where when opening nwn you immediately get a message saying it has stopped working and has to close. Of course when you let windows check for a solution to the problem it responds with 'A problem caused the program to stop working correctly', as if that wasn't apparent enough. Now sometimes after three tries you can break past this and get it to actually work, sometimes it can take up to 15 tries until it works, depending on luck. Also when you close down nwn the stopped working thing pops up as it is closing.

Well it has completely broken for me now. I sat down and did a trial of 68 attempts, but bullheaded as I may be sometimes I just had to call it quits and accept defeat. The only thing that has changed between now and then is an update to my amd catalyst graphics card thingie but I can't imagine why that has any effect.

So. Anyone able to help out and get this fixed?

It also is worth mentioning that I have an application called nwmain_ex which can run in conjunction with nwmain, allowing you to have two instances of nwn up at the same time. When I use nwmain_ex I am able to load the program no problem, no fail, 100% of the time. The problem is that when in game with nwmain_ex all characters and all monsters are invisible and so are their nameplates. This is a problem that other users of nwmain_ex state they do not experience.

As loathe as you may be to hear me say this, I think you just need to do a fresh install. I'm sure your portraits folder could use it, besides. <.<;

what version of windows are you using?  and what graphics card? I had to extract a file to my main NWN folder to get it to work.  check this post out (3rd from the bottom).

Windows 7 and the card is AMD Radeon GS 6700 Series.

Oh my gosh, WW...... ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
You are my hero of the month!

I actually followed the instructions from the last post on that link... "just renaming your nwmain.exe to anything else(game.exe) will fix this also".... and it worked. As simple as that. Changing the name of the program caused it to suddenly start working again. Flawlessly! Now we know I guess.

Well apparently not as fixed as first thought. It boots fine. Now there is just the problem of everything being invisible even with the base program (not nwmain_ex, which also has the same effect though). The compass can't be seen either.

The fix to this is to disable the 'Environmental Mapping on Creatures' box in the video settings. That makes everything visible!

As you have just updated your drivers of the graphics card it's obvious that the update has caused this, no? A driver rollback won't hurt you anyway, just try it, you can reinstall anytime. I think the programm running fine with some stuff invisible speaks for itself too.

Might you have overrides you brought in with copy/paste or something?

xXCrystal_Rose

No new overrides. The solution to the problems were as simple as changing the name of the nwmain application and unchecking the Enable Mapping on Creatures button though.
