It would be nice if you got more preparation time for this, to lay traps, see what's in the baskets (as the consumables seem designed to be used on this quest) and split up for defense. I did this with a 3 man party and we almost wiped due to the sudden attack, that came faster than in say, Wild Orcs.

It's a defense quest, so I was expecting a little setup time.

I was also in a three-man team (a level 3, a level 4, and someone of unknown level) and we butchered the wolves and saved almost all the cattle.

The consumables are more likely meant for the second part of the quest.

I think being thrown into the fight quickly is exciting. One of the quest features is supposed to be an improved reward per cattle saved (but that seems bugged last time I did it) and so giving you setup time would make it too easy for the average team to get the maximum reward. Max rewards should be for the people who can perform (or the people who get really lucky). The XP is incredible, and the gold reward for the worst possible job is on-par with other lowbie quests. That's before we even get into the loot from "tracking the wolves."
