Mark of the Ninja is an amazing side scrolling ninja stealth game that you need to play

Played it.  Loved it.  Most reviews of games go something like this:

"This game is like X and Y, with some of Z".

I can't do that because I've never played a game like this before.  It is very, very good.  It has a self contained story of you, a ninja, avenging your clan after... stuff.  It is a side scroller.  It is focused on stealth.  It is very fun.

I am terrible at side scrollers like Super Meat Boy, it is nothing like that.

You can slowly creep through levels, you can run like a madman with cool ninja skills, you can kill everything that moves or beat the entire game without killing anyone.

It is $15 on steam and on sale for $10 as of the post of this, I highly recommend it.

Anyone else played it?

Gotham

Ancestor Worship

Veneration for family and clan

A cultural focus on hard work, industry, and perfectionism

A xenophobic suspicion of outsiders

Love and Sex are deeply repressed aspects of culture

Formality and Decorum are important

Shorter than most people

Luxurious facial hair

You are now aware that Dwarves are fantasy Asians, and therefore the best race for a ninja concept.

Aren't ninjas clean shaven?

Gotham

The old masters always have beards.

Thats a samurai and he is Chinese, not Japanese.

Not a ninja.

This is an awesome plot point/joke at the end of Act 1.

Also, Dad McNinja has a fine mustache

You only prove my point.  Dwarf 1 is clearly a samuari and has noisy chain mail.  Dwarf 2 has a large, european crossbow. Neither of them look at all stealthy.  Picture 1 is not a dwarf, its a Scandonavian ninja cosplayer.

Mark of the Ninja does not create a new genre. It does, however, set the genre's first proper standard.

Other games similar to it are Trilby: the Art of Theft and Stealth Bastard. Trilby arguably invented the genre, but was far from perfect. Mark manages to incorporate a bigger budget resulting in much better graphics and features, as well as better gameplay design allowing for much more freedom, both in the way you control your character as well as how you go about succeeding.

If you're curious about this sort of game but don't intend to shell out just yet, I suggest giving either Trilby or Stealth Bastard a try. They're both completely free, and where Stealth Bastard kind of originated from Trilby and focuses more on the puzzle aspect of the gameplay (foregoing any notion of storyline completely), Trilby goes pretty heavy on atmosphere and storyline, even if the gameplay is a little bit gimmicky.
