Okay, I am a tech idiot, so feel free to jump all over me if this is infeasible, but...

Something struck me during the Targus event. Server lag is usually very harsh during these things. But at the end of EfU: A where we had very serious lag issues, the end itself was made possible by creation of a severely slimmed down module where only the key areas remained, all other nonvital areas got thrown out. This almost completely eliminated lag.

Wouldn't it be possible to do something similar for events like the Targus thing? Use slimmed mods for them? And then either ask for the patience of nonparticipants while they ran or alternately run them as a separate server but connected to the main one.

No idea how feasible it is, just felt it might be worth throwing out here.

That's a really cool suggestion. Off the top of my head, I'm thinking of the people who don't/wouldn't attend that thing who might be restricted to a smaller group of areas. But if that were resolved some other way (a DM running a parallel event elsewhere) this could be a fine solution.

Mandatory perma death PVP event anyone who shows up most fight, and no raises at the end. I gurantee you will see a deterence in lag, and people showing up.

That seems counter-productive for events that tends to be designed to involve or at least allow spectators. Some DM events are permanent death which require smaller groups as it is, the issue at hand is regarding events which inherently involve larger numbers, for which I think TOH's suggestion has merit.

It is through Art, and through Art only, that we can realise our perfection.

It's been tried. The lag is due to PCs being in the same area. 20-30 PCs in the same area does this.

Dr Dragon

Well Garagos would be sick of all these idiots who show up, and dont do anything in a glorious arena meant for bloodshed. My solution will definitely cut the amount of people in the area, and thus reduce the lag.

So would locking the server so no one can log in, DrD.

Bonhomie

Once the participants for this particular event moved into the vault, lag diminished to very acceptable levels.

The ideal DRD server where events are permadeath, and people who dont have the stomach for it stay out. Locked out would imply that there is no way to enter. People would be keeping themselves out.
